Alberta Louise Burgess, passed away at Vulcan Community Health Centre on September 12, 2003 at 99 years of age.
Alberta was born August 22, 1904 at Jumping Pound, Alberta to William and Sarah Bennett. Her mother taught her at home until the age of ten, then she attended Jumping Pound School for grades three and four. Alberta’s family moved to Bowden, where she attended Red Lodge School and graduated form Bowden High School. Merle Smith of Vulcan passed away peacefully on September 12, 2003 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 80 years after a short battle with cancer.
Merle was the oldest son born to Harry and Grace Smith in Vulcan on July 27, 1923. He grew up on the family farm outside of Vulcan. He started his education at Harvey school and continued on with his high school in Vulcan. He married Pat Pickard in 1945 and they had three children Wayne, Brian and Allan.

Leith Allan Schmeelke, formerly of Champion, passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 88 years.
Leith was born October 17, 1914 in his beloved farm home near Champion, Alberta to William and Carrie Schmeelke. He attended Blusson school and later attended Vermillion and Claresholm agricultural colleges. He farmed with his father before taking over the family farm due to his father’s failing health. Thressa Grace Dingwall Longtime resident of Banff, passed away September 8, 2003 at the Rockyview Hospital, Calgary, Alberta at the age of 89 years.
Grace was born October 29, 1913 at Brant, Alberta to Robert and Tressia Dingwall. She attended Richmond Hill School and Normal School in Calgary. After graduation, Grace moved to Banff to work for the Banff School of Fine Arts. She taught there for one year but due to failing eye sight could not continue teaching. Arnold Edward Erasmus passed away suddenly at his home in Arrowwood, Alberta August 11, 2003 at the age of 66 years.
Arnold was born February 15, 1936 at the family homestead 8 miles north of Vilna, Alberta, the first born of a family of three, to Edward and Ruby Erasmus. He attended a one room school call Castle Park until grade 8 then attended Vilna High School.
Arnold worked in a sawmill, bank and steel mill. After working at Algoma Steel, he attended Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and received a Certificate of Engineering Technology and a Certificate in Welding.

COCKWILL, William George “Bill” 1918 – 2003
William George “Bill” Cockwill passed away at Vulcan Community Health Center on Sunday, June 15, 2003 at the age of 84 years.
Bill was born in Vulcan on August 20, 1918 and was the second son of five children born to Sydney and Ellen Cockwill. He attended school in the Eastway District. On January, 1940 Bill enlisted in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces. He trained in Calgary and was then sent to London and continental Europe. During Bill’s service with the R.C.A.F., he received a Victory Medal, Defense Medal, Canadian Volunteer Medal and France and German Star.

Verne Elbert Orchard of Calgary passed away at Calgary, Alberta June 3, 2003 at the age of 65 years.

Clifton Archie “Cliff” Fraser, beloved husband of Laura, passed away at the Vulcan Community Health Centre on May 24, 2003 at the age of 77.
Cliff was born December 21, 1925 on a farm east of Carmangay. He was the eldest son of Richard and Gertrude Fraser. Cliff attended schools in Lethbridge and county schools east of Carmangay.
