SIM, Allan Douglas 1927 – 2024

Allan Sim of Vulcan, passed away at the Vulcan Extendicare on January 4, 2024 at the age of 96 years.

Allan Douglas Sim was born in Vulcan, Alberta on April 29, 1927, only child of David B. Sim and Kathryn Sim (Mills). He resided with his parents on the farm in the Berrywater district and learned how to farm alongside his father. He attended school at Berrywater for nine years until the school was closed and then finished his schooling in Vulcan. While he was young he became an avid reader. Any printed material was fair game and this hobby lasted his entire lifetime.

Allan farmed with his father until his father’s passing in 1964. He continued to farm on his own while taking care of his mother. In 1972, Allan sold the farm and moved with his mother(Katie) into Vulcan. Katie’s health was beginning to fail at this time and she passed away in 1974. While in Vulcan, Allan worked for a period of time at the old airport for Mabco Homes where trailer homes were manufactured. It was at this time that Allan could pick up on another passion – flower gardening. Many hours were spent tending and watering the various flower beds around his house.

As Allan neared retirement age he decided to sell his house in Vulcan and move to High River to a housing co-op. After a few years he moved again to an assisted living facility in High River. Another move was to a similar facility in Black Diamond where he spent 14 years. He particularly enjoyed this facility because he could look out his window and see the mountains. In 2001, he moved one more time to Extendicare in Vulcan where he resided until his death. He is survived by a small branch of his father’s side of the family, all residing in California.

A Graveside service will take place at a later date.
