Dorothy Lois Hovdebo (nee Cook) July 18, 1943 – March 23, 2016
Once again with heavy hearts we have to say goodbye to our mother, daughter, Grammie, and sister. After a short battle with lung cancer, Dorothy passed away in the Vulcan Hospital on March 23rd, 2016.
Dorothy was born in Prince Albert and grew up in the White Star district eventually moving into Prince Albert. She and Cec were married in June 1962. Deb was born the following June and soon after they moved to Thompson, MB. Jasper was born there in 1965. The family moved back to Prince Albert in 1967. Mom loved Candle Lake and spent the summers there with Jasper and l from 1968 until 1977 when the family moved there on a permanent basis. Mom tried her hand at many different vocations from a florist, to owning and managing a lumber yard, selling mobile homes, and of course her mini greenhouse venture at Candle Lake. She was also very involved with and passionate about municipal politics, specifically with the resort community of Candle Lake. She held various positions on the Candle Lake council including Mayor of the resort village. Mom was particularly proud of her involvement with and the establishment of the Provincial Association of Resort Communities (PARCS) which is still in place today. The establishment of this Association is a testament of Mom’s tenacity and perseverance when she set her mind to something.
Mom had many interests and passions but the love for her grandchildren and great grand-babies was the most special and important to her. She shared her many passions with her grandsons and each of them have carried on with many of these passions themselves. Mom particularly loved camping and fishing and shared many adventures with Jasper, his family and Deb’s boys. She also loved to travel. She and dad would always want to take the boys along on their adventures….and there were always adventures! Deb’s boys were treated to an amazing adventure to Alaska with Mom, Dad and Grandma Cook in 2001. Mom also had a green thumb especially growing her gorgeous flowers, her roses being her favorite. She was so happy when Jasper, Sam and Dad rebuilt her deck in Lomond complete with a place for her flowers.
Mom and Dad were active volunteers in the communities they lived in, always wanting to contribute. They moved to Lomond around 2009 and soon became part of the Community. They absolutely loved this little community and the people that made it. Mom made some very special friends here and shared her crazy personality. As tough as these past few weeks have been, we are all so grateful for the time we had with mom. We were able to share all our special memories with her and she was able to see and feel how important she has been and always will be in each of our lives. She finally knew she has had a powerful influence on each of us.
Words cannot express the gratitude we have for the exceptional staff at the Vulcan Hospital. The genuine care and empathy they gave both mom and dad through these last several weeks has been incredible. Mom faced this short battle head-on and didn’t complain or feel sorry for herself. She always had something funny to say to make the nurses laugh….she touched many of them as well. Mom was truly an amazing character and will be loved and missed by all.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Debra Bachek (Kim) and grandchildren Kyle Hovdebo (Kailee) and great-grandchildren Harper and Mavrick; Jordan Hovdebo and Myles Hovdebo; step grandchildren Chantel Bachek, Danis Bachek-Latimer (Cody) and their children Cade and Luke and Talisa Bachek (Phil Canaday) and their daughter Osha; her son Kenton (Jasper) Hovdebo and grandchildren Conrad Hovdebo and Samuel Hovdebo and their mother Lisa. She is also survived by her mother May Cook, sister-in-law Judy Bruce (Les), and brother-in-law Dale Hewison. Dorothy was predeceased by her longtime companion and husband of 53 years, Cecil, her sister Sandra (Cook) Hewison, her father Edward Cook, her in-laws Nels and Tillie Hovdebo, and her brother-in-law Neil Hovdebo.
A Family Memorial will take place at a later date. Inurnment Candle Lake Cemetery, Candle Lake, Saskatchewan.
In lieu of other tributes and flowers, donations can be made to a charity that Mom felt was so special and touching. She was always proud and supportive of her grandsons. Myles is an instructor/coach with Top Prospects Goaltending and they contribute a portion of their fees to support The Children’s Wish Foundation. Mom wanted to have any tributes forwarded to this fund. https://www.gofundme.com/ptvq5ces.
Our families are so truly grateful and humbled by all the support and kind words shared by everyone in these recent weeks. Thank you so much and God Bless.
