Bjerrisgaard, Holger 1953 – 2025

Holger Bjerrisgaard

Holger was born in Give, Jylland Denmark on May 6, 1953. The family immigrated to Canada in March 1959, arriving in Regina, SK on March 17th. They lived in the Pense, SK area where he grew up farming, hunting and playing hockey. He graduated Thom Collegiate high school in 1971 and travelled to Duram County, Ontario area where he worked until travelling west again ending up Medicine Hat where he obtained his Carpenter’s ticket and met Hazel. An opportunity to combine work and travel took him to the Cayman Islands in fall of 1980 after proposing marriage. They were married in Calgary upon his return in July of 1981. Holger had a full life working as a Carpenter, distributor for Old Dutch Foods, and Spitz Sunflower Seeds, and then back into Carpentry ending his career with Ellis Don Construction.

He was a wonderful involved father to Lyall and Eric, watching them grow into adults with events, activities, Scouting and DeMolay. Holger was a member of Glenbow Masonic Lodge and after building their retirement home in Vulcan, affiliated with Vulcan Lodge. His warm smile and positive outlook made him friends everywhere he went. This also led him to be a leader and mentor to all who needed him. Vulcan became his community through involvement with golfing, curling and the Senior’s Center. He passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025 surrounded by family. Holger is survived by his wife Hazel, sons Lyall (Karen) and Eric (Alicia), granddaughters Cailey and Emma, sisters Anna Hatch and Karen Rosten, plus numerous Aunts, Uncles, and cousins in both Canada and Denmark. A celebration of life will be held in September.

Dear Hazel. Carl and I just heard of Holgar’s passing. Holgar was a very kind man who also had a great sense of humour. We had some good times together and were honoured to have known him. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to you and Lyall and Eric.

Dear Hazel and Family. We are devastated by your loss of Holger it’s all too soon for someone as young as him to pass. In the short time I (Ron) knew him it was a big pleasure to have helped him build your home .

    Hazel and family,
Holger has gone far too soon. We have so many fond memories of your family from McDougall United: the dinners, the choir(Hazel), working in the kitchen, doing odd jobs wherever when needed, Men’s Club, weekends at Kasota – Holger helped it to stay alive and viable. We have missed your entire family. Your spirit of volunteering and contributing were huge assets to our McDougall Family. You gave with smiles and humility. We are grateful that you were a part of our lives and we will remember all of you fondly.
Life without Holger will be different and difficult but try to remember the good times and learn from his example. May God be with each and every one of you.

Dear Hazel, and sons, Anna and Karen,
I give you my deepest sympathy on the death of your beloved Holger. We went to high school back in the day. I had connected on FB and figured out that he lived in the same community as my friend from work. The world has lost a very fine man. May he rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon him.
