HALL, Joyce Elaine – 1939-2010

Hall, Joyce Elaine affectionately known as “Bonk” passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary January 17, 2010 after complications following surgery at the age of 70 years.

Elaine was the eldest daughter of Harold and Clara Bride, born at Vulcan on June 16, 1939. She attended school at Vulcan until the family moved to the Brant/Ensign area where she attended Brant school. After finishing school Elaine started working for the CIBC Bank. She married Richard “Dick” Hall of the Blackie district on March 16, 1957. They moved onto Elaine’s parents farm and farmed with her parents. They lived all their married life on the home place where they raised their family of two daughters and two sons. Elaine worked for a short time off the farm at the Peter Dawson Lodge where her nurturing capacity could flourish, as she had a way with the older generation. She was a valued member of the community and was very active and involved in Home and School, in politics, the United Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Elaine was also a member of the Canadian Figure Skating Association and was a figure skating judge for many years. Elaine curled and golfed at one time and enjoyed camping. She loved to visit and socializing was second nature to her. Elaine enjoyed sewing and would always find the time to do alterations or repair anything that needed mending. She also knitted, crocheted and quilted, making all kinds of thing from rugs to blankets to scarves.

Elaine was always concerned about your health and had a remedy for any ailment that came along whether it was for a family member of a recent acquaintance that was sick. More often than not she suggested that you ”get to the doctor”. Elaine nursed countless kittens and calves as part of the life of a farm wife and always had a couple house cats around. She loved to travel and went many places with the Eastern Star and with her affiliation to the Conservative Party. Elaine would have loved to travel more even though it seemed that she was always on the road going somewhere. She would never admit to this, but she loved to cook, as long as it was not the mundane everyday stuff. Entertaining was big part of her life and it seemed that she was always having company and feeding someone. Elaine loved have the family home to make sure everyone was fed and watered.

Elaine loved her family, especially her grandchildren. “Bonk” was their special name for her. She would always make time for the grandchildren, was always their for them and helped them whenever and with what ever they needed. Elaine always had a job for everyone to do.

Please accept my sympathy on the recent death of Elaine. I was privileged to meet Elaine when I lived in Alberta in 1998-99 and shared good times with her at many OES events; and through conversation, we learned we shared the same political “stripe”! I was very sorry to learn of her serious illness and subsequent death from several good friends in Claresholm- Sandy Menzies and Winona Rouleau. I know she will be dearly missed not only by family but by her many friends and in many spects of the community of Vulcan and other parts of the province. Take care and God bless.

So sorry to hear of Elaine’s passing. We had some great times with her when we were growing up and after Mike and I were married. We just want you all to know that our thoughts are with you today and the many difficult days that will follow. We will always hold our memories fondly in our hearts.
