HUGH BANNERMAN WINCH, PASSED AWAY AT THE PETER LOUGHEED HOSPITAL, CALGARY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2000 AT THE AGE OF 87 YEARS.
HUGH WAS BORN JANUARY 10, 1913 AT GLEICHEN, ALBERTA TO HENRY AND ALMEDITH WINCH. THE FAMILY RESIDED IN THE MAJORVILLE DISTRICT AND HUGH ATTENDED LIBERTY AND EAST MAJORVILLE SCHOOLS.
HUGH MARRIED BERNICE RUSSELL OF QUEENSTOWN IN 1933. THE FOLLOWING SUMMER THEY LOOKED AFTER CATTLE AND HORSES ON PASTURE NEAR LATHOM. THAT FALL THEY MOVED TO DIDSBURY TO WORK WITH HIS BROTHER IVAN IN A TRUCKING BUSINESS, HAULING MINE PROPS FROM THE BUSH WEST OF DIDSBURY, OLDS AND BOWDEN TO DRUMHELLER AND RETURNED WITH COAL.
IN 1936 THEY MOVED BACK TO MAJORVILLE TO HELP ON THE FARM. FOR TWO YEARS THE CROPS DRIED OUT, SO THEY MOVED BACK AND FORTH TO DIDSBURY, THEN TO PICTURE BUTTE TO WORK THE SUGAR BEET HARVEST RETURNING TO DIDSBURY. THEY RETURNED TO MAJORVILLE IN THE SPRING OF 1939 TO FARM AND MOVED TO CADOGAN IN 1945. HE SOLD WATKINS PRODUCTS, WORKED FOR THE MENZIES FARMS IN PROVOST AND CADOGAN AND ALSO RENTED FARM LAND FOR HIMSELF. HUGH’S FATHER MOVED OFF THE FARM AND INTO CALGARY, SO HUGH AND BERNICE MOVED BACK TO MAJORVILLE TO TAKE OVER THE FARM IN THE SPRING OF 1948. THEY RAISED THEIR FAMILY THERE. HUGH’S SON ALVIN PURCHASED THE OPERATION. IN 1973 BERNICE MOVED INTO VULCAN EXTENDICARE. HUGH MOVED TO THE PETER DAWSON LODGE IN 1995, TO BE CLOSE TO BERNICE, WHERE HE HAS RESIDED SINCE.
HUGH WAS A KIND, GENTILE MAN WHO WAS WILLING TO HELP WHERE NEEDED. HE LOVED HIS FAMILY AND THE SPECIAL TIMES TOGETHER, HE HAD A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR. HUGH ENJOYED RESTORING OLD FARM MACHINERY, MUSIC, PLAYING THE BUTTON ACCORDION, CAMPING, FISHING, DANCING, PLAYING CARDS AND MUSIC WITH HIS FRIENDS AT PETER DAWSON LODGE AND DOING WORD PUZZLES.
HUGH LOVED LIFE AND WAS ALWAYS WILLING TO LISTEN AND HELP OUT. HUGH TOOK A SPECIAL TRIP TO ALASKA WITH HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS FROM PETER DAWSON LODGE, ONLY LAST YEAR.
HE LOVED HIS COMMUNITY AND WAS A MEMBER OF THE LIBERTY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION.
BELOVED FATHER OF FOUR DAUGHTERS DOROTHY (GORDON) BOYD OF HANNA, CAROL (BRUCE) HENRY OF MILO, FRANCES SHIELS OF ARROWWOOD AND MARGARET SEEBECK OF LETHBRIDGE, THREE SONS MARVIN (MYRNA) OF LEDUC, ALVIN (SHEILA) OF MILO AND LYLE (JOAN) OF MILO, TWENTY-TWO GRANDCHILDREN, THIRTY-TWO GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, NUMEROUS NIECES AND NEPHEWS.
HUGH WAS PREDECEASED BY HIS WIFE BERNICE IN 1996, INFANT SON LESLIE, BROTHER IVAN (FLORENCE) WINCH, SISTER MARGARET (SAM) FRANCIS, TWO SONS-IN-LAW MELVIN BEAGLE AND CALVIN SEEBECK AND HIS PARENTS.
FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 2000 1:30 P.M. AT THE MILO COMMUNITY HALL WITH PASTOR ED SUMMERS OFFICIATING.
INTERMENT O PERFECT PEACE CEMETERY, MILO, ALBERTA.
HONORARY BEARERS ARE ALL OF HUGH’S FRIENDS AND THE RESIDENTS OF PETER DAWSON LODGE.
