Dayton Williams of Vulcan passed away Monday, July 18, 2005 at Peter Dawson Lodge at the age of 84 years.
Dayton was born June 23, 1921 in Gleichen, Alberta to Clate and Candace Williams. He attended school at Arrowwood where he was active in sports including baseball, hockey and football. Dayton worked for Forest House until he joined the service in 1942. He was stationed in Vancouver, Victoria and Prince Rupert. In May of 1944 Dayton married Darlene Salter. Later that year he was shipped overseas to England, Holland and Belgium. When Dayton returned home, he went to work for Don Beagle. In 1947 he moved to a farm east of Arrowwood and started farming with his bothers Don and Leonard. They also bought and operated the Shouldice service station. In 1965 Dayton bought Axel Anderson’s farm and farmed for seven years. He sold the farm and moved to Calgary but did not like living in the city. Dayton moved back to Arrowwood and ran the Arrowwood Café for a short time. From 1972 to 1975 he worked for Arrow Irrigation as a Field Construction Supervisor and Service Man. Dayton helped his daughter and son-in-law most of the summer months on their farm after his retirement.
In 1996 Dayton moved to Vulcan where he became very involved with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 21, Vulcan where he was a Life Member. He opened up and put on coffee every day for the last ten years and stayed around to help with what ever needed to be done.
Loving father of two daughters Marjorie (Paul ) Leis of Calgary, Cindy (Roy) Hilman of Vulcan, three sons Darrell of Fort Nelson, Bob of Trenton, Ontario, Ricky (Karen) of Ladysmith, B.C., fifteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, two sisters Ruby Beckner and Marlene Snow all of Calgary, three brothers Lyle (Laureen) of Acme, Arnold (Lorraine) Pobst, Hurley (Grace) all of Arrowwood, numerous nieces and nephews and close friend Joyce Birch of Vulcan.
Dayton was predeceased by his son Melvin, four brothers Leland, Leonard, Don (Ursula), Harold (Helen), a sister Helen (Lou) Jones, a brother-in-law Bud Beckner and his parents.
Memorial Service Friday, July 22, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall at Vulcan, Alberta with Rev. Lee Spice officiating.
Inurnment Field of Honor, Vulcan Cemetery.
