WENZEL, Harvey 1928 – 2022

Harvey Wenzel, beloved husband of Rose, passed away peacefully on Feb. 12, 2022 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 93 years.

Raised in Sibbald, AB, Harvey was the fourth born of thirteen children. Harvey met the love of his life Rose Morgan in Little Gem, AB and they married in 1949 in Sylvan Lake, Alta.

Harvey worked for CP Rail for numerous years . Harvey’s stories of being roadmaster on the Calgary to Field track kept many people entertained, including chasing bears out of the famous spiral tunnels. His career on the CPR led him to many different locations including Penhold, Exshaw, Yoho, Castlegar, Beiseker and finally Vulcan, Alberta. After retirement Harvey and Rose settled on an acreage just outside of Vulcan where they ran a market garden for many years.

Harvey was an avid fisherman and hunter. He quite often talked about his trip to Cambridge Bay, NWT. with his adopted son Cyril where he spent almost the whole night fishing until he realized the sun never set. Harvey hunted well into his 80’s where he would win trophy moose in 2018.

Harvey was very involved in the community most importantly with the Royal Canadian Legion where in 2018 he received his 60 year pin.

Harvey was a giant of a man both physically and in personality. He was known for his joke and his common nickname for people “crackerjack”. He was always up for a game of crib, and always had a beer in the basement ready for a conversation.

Harvey will be dearly missed by his wife of 72 years Rose Wenzel (nee Morgan), his son Gord Wenzel, daughter Gloria Struck, daughter-in-law Robin Wenzel, son Cyril Gregory, granddaughters Serena Ouellette (Bo), Brenda De La Mare (Brett), Heather Wenzel (Jeremy), grandsons James Wenzel and Shane Struck (Kari). Along with great grandchildren Dylan, Natalie, Abbygayle and Alexander and many other family members and friends. Harvey was predeceased by a great many family members and dear friends that would make a list unbelievably long, we are grateful to know he is reunited with all of those who left before him.

A Funeral service for Harvey will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Vulcan on Friday, Feb.18, 2022 at 11 a.m., Rev. Gordon Cranch officiating. Interment Vulcan Cemetery.

Tributes in Harvey’s memory can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Vulcan, Branch #21, Box 175, Vulcan, AB T0L 2B0.

Our sincere condolences to all your family as you grieve the loss of Harvey. I (Carol) especially have fond memories of the family visits to our home and the many games of crib your dad enjoyed with mine as well as the fishing trips they took. He had been a special friend to my dad for which I am grateful. So many memories: his good hearted teasing, messing with my hair, the VW that he squeezed himself into, trips to Exshaw etc. He will be missed.

Rose … my sincere sympathy goes out to you and your family on the passing of Harvey! My memories of Harvey go back to the times he used to bring you over to Lomond when you kindly volunteered to play piano at Bethany Lutheran! It was such a pleasure to get to know you both, and ever after the grateful members of our little congregation viewed you and Harvey as a part of our church family. The thoughts of many are with you now! Marvin Maronda of Lomond.

Condolences to Rose, Gloria, Gordon and the extended family. I remember the many times Harvey and my dad would play crib together while keeping one eye on the hockey game. Another memory would be of the fishing trips he and my dad did together. May your memories of Harvey give you comfort during this time.
