Nicholas Phillip “Nick” Horkoff of Vulcan passed away suddenly at home on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at the age of 77 years.
Nick was born December 20, 1925 in Grand Forks,B.C. He attended Grand Forks Russian school until grade seven, when he began working in the orchards. In 1946 at Milo, he married Pauline Shkuratoff and together they worked on an orchard in the Okanagan. They purchased their own orchard 1951. Charles Hamilton “Charlie” Strum of Arrowwood passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 81 years.
Charlie was born April 8, 1922 in Farmington, Maine to Aura and William Strum. At age 6 he moved with is family to Arrowwood for two years and then moved to Queenstown. In October 1940 he joined the Armed Forces and was a member of the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corp.(R.C.O.C.). Earl was born the son of Lars and Ella Helland on July 19, 1915, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. His parents immigrated from Norway and Sweden to North Dakota in 1897 and met there. They were married in Devils Lake, North Dakota in 1906. Always the adventurer and nomad, Lars convinced his wife and family of three children to move to Canada in 1909 where they homesteaded north of Winnifred, Alberta. Lundgren, Reinhold Eric, beloved husband of Ida Lundgren of Vulcan, Alberta passed away Thursday May 8, 2003 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 86 years.
Reinhold was born October 24, 1916 on the family homestead south east of Vulcan to Peter and Ida Lundgren. While growing up, he attended Thigh Hill School and later took a job doing janitor work there. Eventually he saved up enough money to buy his first pair of long pants. Davis, Roberta Mae passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Vulcan Extendicare April 19,2003 at the age of 86 years.
Roberta was born June 1, 1916 at Carmangay, Alberta to Robert and Maryanne Todd. At first, she was schooled at home, then the whole family moved to Vulcan where she attended school. She furthered her education at the University of Calgary and then Edmonton, becoming one of the first eight students to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation in the west. She also had a Bachelor of Education degree.

Walter William Clements of Vulcan, Alberta, formerly of High River passed away at Vulcan Extendicare Friday April 11, 2003 at the age of 85 years.
Walter was born April 5, 1918 at Richdale, Alberta to William and Florence Clements. He received his education at the Union Jack school, Corbihill school and Provost schools. After completing his schooling in the late 1930’s he moved and farmed in the Lindale area. On November 18, 1944 he married Mayme Neff at Carnwood, Alberta. William Joseph “Joe” McCombe, of Lomond, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday April 11, 2003 at the age of 89 years.
Joe was born on May 22, 1913 at Alcan near Taber, Alberta. He grew up on the homestead west of Travers and completed grade 8 at Yetwood School before taking a mechanics course in Calgary. Joe married Ragna Nelson on March 31, 1949, farmed the homestead until its sale in 1951 and moved to central Alberta in 1953.
