STEIN, Rose Gertrude  1912 – 2004

Rose Stein of Vulcan, Alberta passed away peacefully at Vulcan Community Health Centre on September 23, 2004 at the age of 92 years.

Rose was born January 11, 1912 on a farm near Bickleton, Washington and came with her family in 1913 to Champion, Alberta. They moved to the Mossleigh area in 1917 where her father farmed for many years.

Upon completion of High School in Arrowwood Rose attended Normal School in Calgary attaining her teachers certificate. She taught at Herronton and Mossleigh schools until she married George Porter in 1934. They divorced in 1938 and Rose returned to teaching at Sunny Glen School east of Vulcan and Cameron Coulee School west and south of Okotoks.

1944 began a new chapter in Rose’s life when she married Reg Stein. They farmed together for many years before retiring to Vulcan. They enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Arizona. Rose was a talented artist and even taught art in her home. Her students included her two daughters Phyllis and Mary as well as a brother-in-law Roger Middleton. They went on to excel in their artistic endeavors.

Following Reg’s death in 1987, Rose lived on her own for a few years before moving to the Peter Dawson Lodge. Due to failing health she moved to Vulcan Extendicare in 2002 and to Long Term Care at the Vulcan Community Health Centre in February of 2004.

Loving mother of three daughters Helen (Wes) Fulton of Vulcan, Dorothy (Paul) Fritz of Lewiston, Idaho, Mary (Randy) Carruthers of Chestermere, a son-in-law Ronnie Dunham of High River, 10 grandchildren Jack (Sandy) Fulton, Allan (Kathy) Fulton, Beth (Pete) Sherstabetoff, Chuck Dunham, Beverley Dunham, Julie (Patrick) Paulich, Jackie Rae, Jeanne Marie (Doug) Schoeffler, Angela (Blaine) Ross, Ryan Carruthers, grand daughter-in-law Jackie Dunham, a grand son-in-law Richard Nye, 21 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, three sisters Viv Larson of Vancouver, Marj Middleton and Rita Love both of Vulcan, a brother Stan (Gladys) Martin in BC, sister-in-law Tory Martin of Calgary, numerous nieces and nephews.

Rose was predeceased by her parents, husband Reg and a daughter Phyllis Dunham, four brothers, two sisters and their husbands and a sister -in-law.

A Celebration of Rose’s life was held at the Church of Christ , 409-1St. South, Vulcan on Monday September 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Doug Barrie officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Long Term Care unit of Vulcan Community Health Centre Box 299, Vulcan T0L 2B0.

The family would like to extend many thanks to those staff members of Peter Dawson Lodge, Extendicare and Long Term Care who cared for Rose these past eleven years.
