It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the death of Jorgen (John) Vissing Sorensen, born May 29, 1931, who passed away peacefully on August 22, 2018 at the age of 87 years.
John was the only one in his family to immigrate to Canada which he did in late 1959. He was a retired Owner/Operator Truck Driver and was fortunate enough to drive all across Canada and the USA. He drove trucks for over 45 years, with his handle being “The Great Dane”. He loved his job, was a very hard worker, excellent provider for his family and wanted to become the oldest truck driver in North America. He took his grandchildren on road trips over their summer holidays, to give them an adventure and a little taste of life on the road.
He loved animals, camping, traveling and was a fantastic cook! He had a great sense of humor and always had funny stories to tell. He was always able to put a smile on your face and when he smiled at you, a ray of gold would shine. He was real and down to earth, a man we will all never forget! He loved life and lived it to the fullest.
John was the youngest of six children and is predeceased by his mother Karoline Sorensen, father Mads Sorensen, his only brother Christian Sorensen and sisters Hanne, Rosa and Marne, all of Denmark. He is also survived by one sister Lily of Denmark.
He also leaves behind the family that loved him – his daughter Lykke (Joseph) Patterson of Calgary, his granddaughters Kirsten Patterson and Erika Patterson-Fairbarin, and his grandson Kai (Trish) Patterson. John was also blessed with his great grandchildren – Bailey Patterson, Brookelyn Patterson, Brendan Willis, Breah and Braxton Patterson. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews in Denmark, with a special mention to Jorgen Sorensen and Claus Sorensen.
Dad was a very strong man and our hero. He will live in our hearts forever.
To honor John’s request, there will not be a service at this time but the family will gather together to honor his memory.
In lieu of flowers, any tributes in John’s memory can be made to the Vulcan Extendicare Ladies Auxiliary, Box 810, Vulcan, AB T0L 2B0.
