EDWIN “ED” ROBERT SOKVITNE, OF VULCAN, FORMERLY OF LOMOND PASSED AWAY MAY 21, 2001 AT VULCAN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE AT THE AGE OF 82 YEARS.
ED WAS BORN DECEMBER 18, 1918 IN LOMOND, ALBERTA TO NELS AND JOHANNA SOKVITNE. HE ATTENDED SNAKE VALLEY SCHOOL COMPLETING GRADE ELEVEN. ED THEN ATTENDED OLDS AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL FOR A YEAR, AND THEN MOVED TO CALIFORNIA WHERE HE TOOK A DIESEL MECHANICS COURSE. UPON COMPLETION OF HIS EDUCATION HE MOVED BACK TO THE LOMOND DISTRICT WHERE HE FARMED WITH HIS TWO BROTHERS. IN THE EARLY 1950’S HE PURCHASED LAND FROM HIS UNCLES ANDREW AND PAUL SOKVITNE AND BEGAN FARMING ON HIS OWN. ED WAS STILL OUT WORKING HIS LAND LAST YEAR SPENDING QUITE A FEW HOURS ON HIS TRACTOR. HE HAS SPENT THE MAJORITY OF HIS LIFE LIVING IN THE TOWN OF LOMOND AND IN JANUARY OF 2001 HE MOVED INTO THE PETER DAWSON LODGE IN VULCAN WHERE HE HAS CONTINUED TO RESIDE SINCE.
WHEN ASKED WHAT HIS HOBBIES WERE, ED WAS QUOTED AS SAYING “DRIVING AROUND”. HE WOULD CLIMB INTO HIS FORD AND TRAVEL AROUND THE COUNTRYSIDE FOR MILES AND MILES.
ED WAS A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION, VULCAN BRANCH 21 FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS, A PAST MEMBER OF THE LOMOND MASONIC LODGE AND ODD FELLOWS.
SURVIVED BY TWO BROTHERS KEN (FLORENCE) SOKVITNE OF VULCAN, LEONARD (MURIEL) SOKVITNE OF LOMOND, NUMEROUS NIECES AND NEPHEWS.
ED WAS PREDECEASED BY A SISTER STELLA WILLIAMSON, A NIECE DELLA BALOG AND HIS PARENTS.
FUNERAL SERVICE MONDAY MAY 28, 2001 AT 1 P.M. AT BETHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH, LOMOND WITH PASTOR ED SUMMERS OFFICIATING.
INTERMENT VULCAN CEMETERY AT 3:30 P.M.
CASKET BEARERS WERE HIS NEPHEWS GARRY SOKVITNE, DWAIN SOKVITNE, MARVIN HENRICKSON, LEROY HENRICKSON, LORNE HENRICKSON AND ROD ORMAN.
