SMITH, EMMA May 17, 1918 – October 14, 2011

Our mother Emma Sloan Smith, passed away at the Vulcan Community Health Centre October 14,2011.

She was also predeceased by her baby boy who lived six hours, two grandsons, Kenneth in 1978 and Reid Karl in 1996, her husband Fay D. Smith in 1981 and Raymond Fath to whom she was married 1996-2002.

We, her children, Sloan, Rita, Carol, Bruce and Kathryn feel privileged to have had our mother’s love for 93 years. We will forever cherish our memories of her and the legacy of wisdom and example she left to us.
Mother was a survivor of the 1918 flu epidemic and at the age of 6 months was left with chronic bronchiectasis. In spite of her weakened lungs our mother lived a full life. Her passion in life was music, and this career started at the age of 12 years when she was called to be the pianist at the Kimball Church, South of Cardston. Altogether, she served as pianist/organist for 62 years for the L.D.S. church. Mom was a gifted musician who served her community well in every facet of the musical world. Music was mother’s life and she loved it most next to her 5 children, 28 grand- and 90 great-grandchildren. The “Little Bow River Valley” where mom lived for 63 years was a wonderful location to raise her children and entertain her grandchildren. She was a remarkable grandmother who always had tons of delicious food and activities planned such as weiner roasts, swimming and kick-the-can. How the kids loved riding their motorcycles on those hills. Mother spent many dedicated years of serving in the L.D.S. church in numerous capacities. She was called to serve in the Las Vegas, Nevada mission in 1982. Mother was a huge contributor to her community by serving on the Carmangay Home and School board for 25 years. She was a great friend and neighbor who was always ready to help. Mother was definitely one of the “Grand Ladies” of Carmangay. She took every calling and assignment seriously and put her heart and soul into everything she did. We will miss you every day Mom, but just know that every time we hear a pretty piece of music, we will think of you.

We would like to thank Dr. Wade staff at the Peter Dawson Lodge, Willow Creek Nursing Home and staff at the Vulcan Hospital for their excellent care.

Funeral service will be held at the L.D.S. Church, Champion, AB. Saturday October 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. with Bishop Robert Ellis officiating. Friends may meet with the family prior to the service at the church from 10 to 10:45 am.
