Smith, Douglas Burton passed away January 6, 2009 at Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 88 years.
Doug was born at Vulcan on September 14, 1920 to Donald and Hazel Smith. He spent his early years in Washington State where his dad had a garage. The family moved back to the Reid Hill District in time for Doug to start grade one. He attended Marshall School until Grade 9 and Vulcan High School to Grade 12. Doug went to Vancouver to Aeronautical Tech School and upon graduation was posted to #2 AOS School in Edmonton. He was transferred to #8 AOS in Quebec where he remained until the end of the War. Doug married Muriel Fontaine in 1942 and when he was discharged in 1945, he and Muriel came home and farmed on the family farm in Berrywater. He went into business management in Vulcan, Lethbridge and Calgary. Muriel died in 1978 and Doug remarried Evelyn Reath in 1981. They lived in Vulcan until his passing.
The most fulfilling thing in Doug’s life was his involvement with the church in Vulcan, Calgary and Lethbridge. He was also very involved with Alberta Bible College and Pine Lake Camp. Doug drove school bus for the County for sixteen years.
Beloved husband of Evelyn, loving father of daughter Karen (Wayne) Caswell, two sons Doug (Carolyn), Byron (Lynda), eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, sister Betty Wickstrom and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doug was predeceased by his first wife Muriel, two brothers Allan and Russell and his parents.
Funeral service Monday, January 12, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at Vulcan Church of Christ with Rev. Doug Barrie officiating.
Interment Vulcan Cemetery.
Casket bearers Deanna Caswell, Susanne Caswell, Tracy Pedersen, Lori Millard, Kerry Weiss, Don Smith, Eryn Smith and Cory Smith.
