Dave Smith, youngest son of David and Catherine (McDougall) passed away on March 21, 2008.
Dave leaves to celebrate his life, wife Julie and daughters Dawn Gass, Doneva (Richard Robinson) Smith , Danielle (Scott) Jantzie and Danette Smith, two grandchildren Matt and Nikki Gass.
Dave was predeceased by his parents, his brother Jim, sisters Madge, Agnes and Ina and one daughter Della Rose.
Dave was born near Manville at Saltaux, Alberta – his father was a farmer and carpenter. His mother died when he was a baby. He left home early and joined the Army serving with the 14th Army Tank Battalion Calgary Regiment as a gunner operator. He served in Canada, the UK, the Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe.
Dave married Julie (Julenda Tytlandsvik) in 1957. They lived in Calgary and area when the girls were young then moved to Vulcan in 1970. Dave worked in maintenance, as a carpenter and did some farming. He took a job with the Parks Department in Vulcan, where he worked until his retirement in 1984.
After his retirement, Dave and Julie did some traveling but Dave spent most of his time scouting for and cutting fire wood for winter. Dave loved building things in his shop and always had to make four of everything for his daughters. Dave taught by example and taught his girls a good work ethic and love of the outdoors.
Dave and Julie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December, 2007.
A small family service was held March 26 at the Chapel of Vulcan Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, tributes in Dave’s memory can be made to Vulcan Community Health Centre Long Term Care, Box 299, Vulcan T0L 2B0.
