David Oscar Sletto, formerly of Champion, Alberta passed away October 7, 2002 in Lethbridge, Alberta at the age of 43 years.
David was born December 5, 1958 in Vulcan, Alberta to Clayton and Elizabeth Sletto. He attended school at Champion for grades one through nine and completed his high schooling in Vulcan. He worked with his father on the farm and continued after completing his education. In 1977 he married Cindy Buchan and they began their union together on the farm. David began working for the County of Vulcan as an equipment operator in the early 1990’s. He then was employed at Richardson Foods in Claresholm for a short time and in 1993 David and Tom Ellis formed a company called S & E Steamers. In 1995 David divorced Cindy and moved to Milo, he began working for Koch Oil and Gammon Holdings Ltd. driving trucks and dispatching. Eventually, in 1997 he owned and operated Buffalo Hills Oil Field Services until failing health in the spring of 1999. In December that same year he married Sheryl Kaake and in June of 2000 David moved to the Long Term Care unit of the Vulcan Community Health Centre and later moved into Vulcan Extendicare, where he has continued to reside ever since.
David loved his family, especially his children. Being a supportive father he was proud of all of them and their accomplishments. He also spent many hours watching them participate in baseball and hockey. David and his family went White Water Rafting in Jasper and in 1998 he took his children to Disneyland where they shared a thrilling holiday together. Last year he attended the company pig roast in Milo with his family and friends, which he enjoyed immensely. David loved to laugh, sharing many stories and jokes and was known to all as a very sociable man who enjoyed to be with people.
In his younger years David played slo-pitch and hockey, later he was active in curling. He also enjoyed playing crib, dominos and yahtzee. He was a member of the Champion Lion’s Club, Champion Legion and Champion Curling Club even serving a turn as president.
Loving father of a daughter Tanya of Lethbridge, two sons Derek of Champion and Kyle of High River, their mother Cindy Sletto (fiancé Duane Arndt) both of High River, Sheryl Sletto of Calgary, two sisters Sharon (Pat) Lattery of Calgary, Carol (Gerry) Zinck of Spingstein, Manitoba, a brother Robert (Marion) of Claresholm and Champion, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
David was predeceased by a niece Laura Sletto and his parents.
Funeral service Saturday October 12, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at the Champion United Church with Lee Spice Officiating.
Casket bearers Terrill Warren, Glen Fath, Greg Anderson, Tom Ellis, David Bach and Don Buchan.
Interment Champion Cemetery.
