Jean Elizabeth Scobie passed away peacefully on February 2, 2007 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 84 years.
Jean was born at Mossbank, Saskatchewan on November 15,1922 to John and Agnes Clarke. She was raised as an only child after the death of her younger sister in 1928, but she grew up close to the Balfour family to whom she was considered a “sister”. Jean enjoyed skating, school activities and assisted at the local telephone office until she finished school. She worked in the local Imperial Bank of Canada in Mossbank.
Jean met Morley Scobie when he was stationed with the RCAF in Mossbank and they were married in 1945. They moved to Cayley and Jean assisted with the Cayley Sprouts Girls Club and took part in church choir and enjoyed skating, curling and playing bridge. Jean and Morley moved to Kirkcaldy with son Brian in 1949 where Morley was an agent for AP Grain. Lynn was born in 1952. In 1957 they went farming full time and bought land farm Spencer Lewis, Nettie and Mildred Ware.
Jean kept busy driving Brian and Lynn to their activities with the driver’s license Morley bought for her in Vulcan. She was proud to say she had never taken a driver’s test. When her children grew up and had families, she gladly embraced the role of Grandmother and became “Nana” to her grandchildren as well as to many friends and children in the community. Jean lived on the farm until moving to Vulcan in 1989 and has resided at the Peter Dawson Lodge for the past ten months.
Jean enjoyed many community activities. She was a member of Cloverleaf Rebekah Lodge were she served at Past Nobel Grand, a charter member of the Vulcan Lionettes, a Brownie leader and an active member of Kirkcaldy Women’s Institute since 1949. Jean also enjoyed playing bridge and bingo and was on her way to a bridge game when she suffered a stroke. She wanted to carry on the bridge game rather than call the ambulance.
