SCHIERMAN, Helena “Helen”  1928 – 2004

Helena “Helen” Schierman of Vulcan was called home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 3, 2004 at Vulcan, Alberta at the age of 76 years.

Helen was born in Calgary, Alberta on February 17, 1928 to Adam and Marilis (Rousch) Rausch. She began her formal education at Green Acre school in Carstairs, then around 1935 moved with her grandparents to Calgary and attended Riverside, Bridgeland Cottage and Langevin High schools. Helen married Albert Schierman November 1, 1952 and together operated the family farm. They moved into Vulcan in 1982 where she has continued to reside since.

Helen was a devoted wife who loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She always had time for them, was an outstanding homemaker, a fantastic cook and a gracious fun-loving hostess. She enjoyed her many hobbies including reading books, baking, which would disappear very quickly, needle work, crocheting many afghans and quilting. She also enjoyed driving neighbors, friends and family to the city, where she was undaunted by the traffic.

Helen was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Vulcan Extendicare, Alley Cats who bowled weekly at High River and Vulcan Evangelical Missionary Church where she shared her devotion to books and love of reading as librarian, was a faithful and active member of Women’s Ministries, JOY (Just Older Youth) groups, and serving one morning each week with the Breakfast Club at Hazel Cameron Elementary School.

Loving mother of a daughter Cathy Normandin of High River and a son Terry (Linda) Schierman of Vulcan, seven grandchildren, three sisters Wilhelmina “Willy” (John) Schierman, Esther Spady, Marion Dippel, a brother Reuben (Barbara) Rausch, a sister-in-law Ann Rausch, numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Albert in 2003, three brothers Victor Rausch, Martin (Anne) Rousch, Elvert Rausch, two brothers-in-law Reuben Spady, John Dippel and her parents.

Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at the Vulcan Evangelical Missionary Church at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Frank Harris officiating.

Honorary Bearers were Dorothy McIntyre, Esther Lebsack, Malita Lebsack, Ruby Schierman, Vera Hartung, Lenore Deimert and Helanda Hartung.

Casket Bearers were Brett Schierman, Braedan Schierman, Ashley Schierman, Nathan Normandin, Justin Normandin, Erin Normandin and Rachelle Normandin.

Interment Vulcan Cemetery.
