SCHIERMAN, David “Dave”  1920 – 2002

David “Dave” Schierman, was called home to his Lord and Saviour,  surrounded by his family on Sunday June 23, 2002 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 81 years.

Dave was born July 29, 1920 at Eva, Alberta to John and Mary Schierman. As a young boy he moved with his family to Calgary, where they resided for a short time prior to moving to Queenstown,  where he spent the next thirteen years.  He received his early education at the country school of Giffen. In 1937 he moved with his family to the Vulcan area five miles NE of town. During the winter months Dave attended Calgary Technical School , now known as S.A.I.T. , taking Motor Mechanics. During the summer he helped out on the family farm. In 1942 he was called to serve in the Army as an instrument mechanic. He served in Camrose, Pt. Alberni, Hamilton and Kingston, before going overseas in 1944 to England and Holland with the RCEME until returning home in 1945. On July 29, 1947 he married Ruby Grinde in Wetaskiwin. He purchased a farm through the Veteran’s Land Act, but continued to reside in Vulcan. Eventually, they purchased a home on Dalemead Crescent in Calgary, and a recreational home at Canyon Campground, Radium . Dave has continued to reside in both Calgary and Vulcan ever since.

David loved his wife, his children and especially his grandchildren. He spent many hours supporting them with their sports, and taking pride in all of their accomplishments. He also shared an eternal love with his Lord,  Jesus Christ. He passed on his faith to his children and their children. He was a good friend to all, and was considered a gentleman farmer.

Dave had many interests throughout the years. He loved to tinker with electronics and could fix almost anything. His true passion was working with his Ham Radio. He and his family attended Ham fests on several occasions and was known to his Ham buddies as VE6ARU. He also enjoyed watching sports, being a season ticket holder for both the Calgary Flames and the Calgary Stampeders for numerous years. Dave enjoyed traveling and taking  cruises with Ruby. His favorite part on the cruises were the buffets. He enjoyed his buffets both on and off the water, with the waiters and waitresses, calling him by  name.

Dave was interested in his community and his church. He served on the Vulcan  Town Council in the sixties,  played in the County Band, and attended the Vulcan Evangelical Missionary Church and Centre Street Church in Calgary for numerous years.

Beloved husband of Ruby, loving father of a daughter Eunice (Ken) Munton all of Vulcan; a son Michael (Suedale) Schierman of San Ramon, California; a foster son Lyle (Tosha) Bow of Vulcan; nine grandchildren, Jared (Jennifer) Munton of Calgary; Allison Munton of Calgary; Barret and Bryant Munton of Vulcan; Matthew and Michaela Schierman of San Ramon, California; Kyle, Shyra and Justise Bow of Vulcan; a great granddaughter Melanie Munton of Calgary; four sisters,  Pauline (Jacob) Fritzler of Calgary; Lillian Hartung of Vulcan; Frieda (Charlie) Budd of Lacombe; Lenore (Eric) Deimert of Vulcan; three brothers,  John (Wilhelmina) Schierman of Vulcan; Sam (Ruby) Sherman of Calgary; Albert (Helen) Schierman of Vulcan; numerous nieces and nephews.

Dave was predeceased by his parents John and Mary and two infant sisters.

Funeral service Friday June 28, 2002 at 2 P.M. at the Cultural Recreation Centre, Vulcan with Pastor Frank Harris and Dr. Henry Schorr officiating.

Honorary Bearers George Vandale, Vic Lebsack, Don Grinde, Harry Shierman, Henry Busch, George Lane and Charlie Budd.

Casket Bearers Jared Munton, Barret Munton, Bryant Munton, Doug Grinde, Terry Schierman and Ted Hartung.

Private family internment Vulcan Cemetery.
