Harvey George “Swede” Robertson, formerly of Vulcan and recently of Stavely, Alberta passed away suddenly at Calgary, Alberta February 23, 2003 at the age of 73 years.

Born in Champion, Alberta on January 13, 1930 to Bright and Sadie Robertson and raised in the Champion – Carmangay area, Swede was known for his athletic ability, especially in tennis, badminton and baseball. He also enjoyed bird hunting, cards and was an avid fisherman. It was during his youth he obtained the nickname of “Swede” which he is still known by today.

Swede married Gladys Anderson in October of 1952. Together they moved to Wayne, Alberta where Swede was a grain buyer for the Pioneer Grain Company. In 1956 they moved to Vulcan where Swede continued to work for Pioneer Grain and raised their family of five children. Swede retired from the Company in 1974 and worked at the Vulcan Hotel and later the Siksika Golf Resort.

In 1988 Swede retired to Calgary and married Marge Magee in the Spring of the same year. They continued to reside in Calgary and Marge passed away in 1997. Swede moved to Stavely in 2002 and has resided there since.

Swede was well known for his sense of humour and friendship, he will be sadly missed by his daughters Lori (Gary) Maetche of Calgary, Diane (Greg) Gorzitza of Claresholm, Shelley (Garth) Beck of Yellowknife and a son Barry (Grace) Robertson of Spruce Grove, a daughter-in-law Carol Robertson of Vulcan, stepson Brian (Linda) Magee of Ft. McMurray, a brother-in-law Dale Clark of Lethbridge, eleven grandchildren Lindsay and David Beck, Chris and Hannah Maetche, Justin, Geoffrey and Brandon Gorzitza, Stuart and Julia Robertson, Elyse and Brett Robertson, a niece.

Swede was predeceased by his wife Marge, parents, infant granddaughter Heather, eldest son Jim and very recently his only sister Mabel Clark.

Memorial Service will be held Friday February 28, 2003 at 1:30 P.M. at Vulcan United Church with Rev. Henry Friesen officiation.

Honorary bearers were grandchildren; Lindsay Beck, David Beck, Chris Maetche, Hannah Maetche, Justin Gorzitza, Geoffrey Gorzitza, Brandon Gorzitza, Stuart Robertson, Julia Robertson, Elyse Robertson and Brett Robertson.

In lieu of flowers tributes in Swede’s memory could be made to either the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta 1825 Park Rd. S.E. Calgary T2G 3Y6 or S.T.A.R.S. 1441 Aviation Park N.E. Box 570 Calgary T2E 8M7.
