DONALD ALEXANDER POVEY OF VULCAN PASSED AWAY MARCH 21, 2002 AT THE VULCAN EXTENDICARE AT THE AGE OF 71 YEARS.
DON WAS BORN OCTOBER 4, 1930 AT OXBOW, SASKATCHEWAN TO ALEC AND JANET POVEY. HE ATTENDED THE COUNTRY SCHOOL OF DALESBORROW TILL GRADE NINE. AT THE AGE OF EIGHT, HE DID MAINTENANCE WORK AT THE SCHOOL. HE TOOK HIS GRADE TEN BY CORRESPONDENCE AND WHEN THE WAR STARTED HE QUIT SCHOOL TO HELP OUT ON THE FARM . DON CONTINUED TO BREAK HORSES AND WAS THE ONLY COWBOY IN THE DISTRICT. DON WORKED HIS OWN LAND AND HELPED HIS FATHER ON THE FAMILY FARM UNTIL THE AGE OF 29. ON OCTOBER 10, 1953 HE MARRIED LORRAINE DYER WHOM HE HAD MET WHILE PLAYING AT A DANCE. AFTER GETTING HAILED OUT THREE YEARS IN A ROW HE DECIDED TO BRANCH OUT AND BECOME A GRAIN BUYER AND MOVED AROUND SASKATCHEWAN. FROM 1960 TO 1971 HE BOUGHT GRAIN FOR VARIOUS GRAIN COMPANIES. IN 1967 HE MOVED TO ALBERTA WITH HIS FAMILY. DON WAS TOWN MAN FOR BOTH VULCAN AND CHAMPION. HE BEGAN HIS OWN JANITORIAL BUSINESS IN VULCAN. DON AND LORRAINE DIVORCED IN 1985 AND FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS HE WORKED FOR THE TOWN OF VULCAN AS A HEAVY DUTY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR AND LATER FOR THE COUNTY. DON MOVED TO HUSSAR AND WORKED FOR THE COUNTY OF WHEATLAND BEFORE RETIRING IN 1990. DON RESIDED IN DRUMHELLER AND THEN MOVED TO CHAMPION IN 1996. HE REUNITED WITH LORRAINE AND IN MAY OF 1998 MOVED INTO THE PETER DAWSON LODGE. IN JUNE OF 1999 HE MOVED INTO VULCAN EXTENDICARE WHERE HE HAS CONTINUED TO RESIDE SINCE.
DON LOVED HIS FAMILY AND SPENDING SPECIAL TIMES TOGETHER. HIS TRUE PASSION IN LIFE WAS MUSIC. AT THE AGE OF FIVE HE STARTED PLAYING SEVERAL INSTRUMENTS AND BY THE AGE OF NINE HE WAS PLAYING IN A BAND. OVER THE YEARS HE PLAYED THE VIOLIN, ACCORDION, BANJO, MANDOLIN AND GUITAR, THE LATTER BEING HIS FAVORITE. THROUGHOUT HIS MUSICAL CAREER HE PLAYED WITH SEVEN DIFFERENT BANDS. BETWEEN THE AGES NINE AND SIXTY-FIVE HE MISSED ONLY PLAYING AT TWO NEW YEAR’S EVE DANCES. DON GOT HIS FONDEST WISH WHEN HIS TWO SONS JOINED HIM IN HIS LAST BAND.
DON WAS PRESIDENT OF THE RESIDENT COUNCIL AT EXTENDICARE. HE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN HELPING TO OBTAIN A GRANT WHICH ASSISTED THE LODGE TO PLACE FLOWER POTS, TREES AND BIRD HOUSES ON THE GROUNDS OF THE NURSING HOME.
DON WAS QUOTED AS SAYING “I BELIEVE YOU HAVE BEEN PUT ON THIS EARTH FOR A PURPOSE AND WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE A PURPOSE ANY MORE YOU ARE TAKEN AWAY.”
BELOVED HUSBAND OF LORRAINE OF VULCAN, LOVING FATHER OF FIVE SONS RODNEY (JANICE) OF CHAMPION, KELLY (VICKI) OF LETHBRIDGE, LYLE OF VULCAN, DWIGHT AND DARCY BOTH OF CALGARY AND THEIR MOTHER JUDY OF RED DEER, NINE GRANDCHILDREN TYLER, CHAD, COLTAN, JESSICA, TAMARA, KRYSTAL AND THE GIRLS MOTHER GLENNA POVEY OF CLARESHOLM, BRADY, BRANDON AND BRITTANEY, FIVE SISTERS LOIS RUTH OF VANCOUVER, PANSY ERIK OF WEYBURN, SASKATCHEWAN, GWEN (TOM) EAST OF ALAMEDA, SASKATCHEWAN, EFFIE (KEN) DYER OF CARLYLE, SASKATCHEWAN, NINA (DON) MACNACK OF REGINA, A BROTHER FRED (DOROTHY) POVEY OF ESTEVAN, SASKATCHEWAN, NUMEROUS NIECES AND NEPHEWS.
DON WAS PREDECEASED BY TWO BROTHERS-IN-LAW BEN RUTH, MATT ERIK, TWO NEPHEWS AND HIS PARENTS.
CASKET BEARERS WERE HIS GRANDSONS TYLER POVEY, CHAD POVEY, COLTAN POVEY AND SONS DWIGHT POVEY, DARCY POVEY AND STEP-SON GREG KLEIN.
CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE WEDNESDAY MARCH 27, 2002 AT 2:30 P.M. AT THE VULCAN EXTENDICARE WITH REV. DOUG BARRIE OFFICIATING.
