It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Ruth Salina Fey Myers on July 19, 2005.
Born October 20, 1917, she grew up and resided on the family farm twenty miles east of Vulcan. Predeceased by her parents and one brother Vernon (1990) she is survived by her brother Richard, three nieces and five nephews.
Ruth had a quest for knowledge that remained with her throughout her life. She attended public school at Prospect Slope then onto Calgary and Edmonton where she graduated from high school. In 1936 she moved back to Calgary and received her diploma in Cosmetology (beauty culture). It was in this city that she fell in love with a dashing pilot. A misunderstanding surrounding a fire resulted in the breakdown of the affair. The outcome was to change her life and haunt her for many years. During the war she worked the night shift at an aircraft factory in Los Angeles. Here she continued her schooling and acquired a Bachelor of Arts in social work. In 1946 she moved to New York and acquired a job in the slums where she dealt with broken homes and low income families. In the early 60s, she and a friend purchased an old home on Long Island which they renovated and converted into a nursing home for the aged. Some years later she built a house on a high cliff that overlooked the Atlantic Ocean. It was here that she nursed her mother, prior to her death. She became Director of Social Services at Port Jefferson Hospital.
Ruth was a wonderful, caring person whose main object in life was to give care and compassion to those in need. She did not harbor hate, prejudice, anger or revenge. In 1990 she built a house at the farm and she enjoyed the serenity of the area where she was born. In 1998 she moved to Mountain View Estates at Nanton and resided there until five weeks before her passing.
