Kenneth Sinclair McLean, of Vulcan, Alberta passed away March 25, 2005 at Vulcan Extendicare at the age of 90 years.
Ken was born on the homestead farm in the Eastway District of Vulcan County September 21, 1914 to John “Jack” and Sarah McLean. He attended Eastway and Milo Schools where he met Doris Beckner. Ken then attended Barber School in Calgary in 1936 to 1937. He purchased Model Barber Shop on 4th Street and 8th Avenue in Calgary. Doris came to Calgary to work and they where married November 5, 1938 at Central United Church. They continued their memberships in both the Young Mens Group and the United Church Women. Dale, Myrna and Lana were born in Calgary. Ken enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in 1943 and served until 1946. The family then moved back to the farm where Murray and Gordon were born. While farming Ken continued to operate a barber shop in the Queenstown Hotel and later a shop in Milo until 1975. Ken was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the B.P.O. Elks and the Masonic Lodge.
Ken retired from farming and purchased race horses and this was Ken and Doris’s summer hobby for many years. They also were able to winter in Mesa, Arizona for 21 years until Ken’s eyesight failed. They sold the farm to their son Murray and Norma and purchased a home in Vulcan in 2000. Ken’s health made it necessary to move into Extendicare in 2002 where he has resided since.
Ken is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Doris (Beckner), their five children, 13 grand and 18 great grandchildren; Dale and Mollie McLean of Magnolia, Texas and his two daughters Kari (Ron) Thiessen and their three children of Vulcan, and Debbie (Bruce) Sicotte and their four children of High River, Myrna and Bob Schmidt of Pine Lake and their two sons Doug (Joan) Schmidt and their four children and Norm (Rinky) Schmidt and their two children all of Red Deer, Lana and Gord Mallery of Calgary and her two children Lori (Barry) Rungeling and their two children, Jason (Michelle) Johnstone and their child all of Calgary, Murray and Norma McLean of Vulcan, their three children Scott (Amber) McLean and their two children of Vulcan, Marty McLean and his fiancee Jenn Janzen of Edmonton, Kelly McLean and special friend Dan Hartmann of Calgary, Gordon and Linda McLean and their four children Jordy, Devin, Lindsay and Cody all of Vulcan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ken was predeceased by his parents Jack and Sarah (Sinclair) McLean and two sisters Annie (Jack) Huyck and Mildred McLean.
Funeral service Wednesday March 30, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at Vulcan United Church with Sue MacDonald D.M. officiating.
Casket bearers Scott McLean, Marty McLean, Jason Johnstone, Doug Schmidt, Norm Schmidt, Devin McLean, Jordy McLean and Cody McLean.
Interment Vulcan Cemetery.
