LAIRD FREDERICK ALBERT “FRED” MAY, PASSED AWAY AT HIS HOME IN VULCAN, ALBERTA ON DECEMBER 17, 1997 AT THE AGE OF 69 YEARS.
FRED WAS BORN APRIL 21, 1928 AT TORONTO, ONTARIO. HE ATTENDED SCHOOL TORONTO AND ROCHESTER, NEW YORK. FRED CALLED HIMSELF THE ORIGINAL “ADAM” BECAUSE HE LOST A RIB’ TO LUNG PROBLEMS DURING HIS MEDICAL INTERNSHIP TO BECOME A DOCTOR AT A ROCHESTER HOSPITAL. HE LATER WORKED AT THE SICK CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AS A MALE NURSE IN TORONTO. IN 1952 FRED ENLISTED IN THE CANADIAN ARMY AND SERVED IN CANADA AND THE FAR EAST IN THE MEDICAL CORPS, UNTIL HIS HONOURABLE DISCHARGE IN 1955.
HE MARRIED EVELYN AND TOGETHER THEY HAD FIVE CHILDREN. FRED DROVE TRUCK FOR MANY YEARS. HE MOVED OUT WEST TO VULCAN WHERE HE WAS EMPLOYED WITH VULCAN TRANSPORT FOR FIFTEEN YEARS, UNTIL HE RETIRED IN 1990.
FRED ENJOYED VULCAN, TALKING TO MANY PEOPLE DURING HIS DELIVERIES AROUND THE COUNTY. HE LOVED HIS FAMILY, CHILDREN AND ANIMALS, HE WAS KNOWN FOR FIXING SMALL APPLIANCE, TAKING IN STRAYS AND PROVIDING SHELTER FOR THEM. HE ENJOYED LISTENING TO OPERA AND COUNTY WESTERN MUSIC. HE ENJOYED HIS MEMBERSHIP AND TIMES WITH FELLOW ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION MEMBERS AT BRANCH #21, VULCAN.
BELOVED FATHER OF TWO DAUGHTERS DEBRA (BOB) GORDON AND ELEA “RED” GRATTON, TWO SONS JOHN (MARIE) AND KEN (GRACE), THEIR MOTHER MRS. EVELYN MAY, EIGHT GRANDCHILDREN, A BROTHER DONALD “RICK” (PAULETTE), TWO SISTERS EDNA FADDEN AND MARILYN MAY, AND NUMEROUS NIECES AND NEPHEWS.
FRED WAS PREDECEASED BY HIS SON BILL, SISTER VELMA, FATHER LAIRD SAMUEL MAY AND MOTHER WILHELMINA (nee: BABE) MAY.
“WE SINCERELY THANK YOU FOR BEING HIS SURROGATE FAMILY DURING THESE PAST YEARS, ESPECIALLY JEAN SCHUILING OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION, LEO KAISER OF VULCAN TRANSPORT, PAT WISENER OF VULCAN FUNERAL HOME FOR ACTING AS OUR LIAISON. HIS PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE DURING OUR ANXIOUS PERIOD WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. TO THE MANY FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS FRED HAS KNOWN IN VULCAN. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL. WE LOVE YOU DAD.” RED.
FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT THE VULCAN LEGION HALL TUESDAY DECEMBER 30, 1997 AT 11 A.M. WITH PASTOR FRANK HARRIS OFFICIATING.
INTERMENT WILL FOLLOW IN THE VULCAN CEMETERY FIELD OF HONOUR.
CASKET BEARERS AND HONOUR GUARD WERE MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION, BRANCH #21 VULCAN.
