HANNAH JOSEPHINE “JO” MATLOCK WAS CALLED HOME TO HER LORD AND SAVIOUR DECEMBER 10, 2000 AT THE VULCAN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE AT 80 YEARS OF AGE.
JO WAS BORN AT SUFFIELD, ALBERTA TO ROY AND VIOLET CLARKSON. SHE CAME TO VULCAN AT AGE OF FOUR YEARS. SHE ATTENDED VULCAN SCHOOL AND IN GRADE NINE, SHE MET HARRIS MATLOCK AND TOGETHER THEY FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL AND WERE MARRIED IN OCTOBER OF 1941. THEY BOUGHT A FARM WITH HARRIS’S VETERAN’S AFFAIRS AGREEMENT. ERECTED A BUILDING ON THE FARM AND CALLED IT “THE COTTAGE”, WHERE THEY SPENT THE SPRING, SUMMER AND PART OF THE FALL MONTHS THERE AND THE WINTERS THEY LIVED IN THE HOUSE IN VULCAN. SHE BEGAN WORKING FOR SIMPSON SEARS IN 1955 AND IN 1961 THEY PURCHASED THE SIMPSON SEARS CATALOGUE OFFICE LOCATED ON CENTRE STREET, MANAGED IT AND LIVED IN THE SUITE ABOVE IT UNTIL 1974 WHEN THEY PURCHASED A HOUSE ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE LUTHERAN CHURCH WHERE THEY HAVE RESIDED SINCE.
JO LOVED LIFE AND PEOPLE. IN HER EARLY YEARS SHE WAS A GREAT SKATER AND PLAYED WOMEN’S HOCKEY. SHE ALSO ENJOYED CURLING AND WAS INDUCTED INTO THE LADIES CURLING HALL OF FAME. SHE ALSO ENJOYED TRAVELLING AND WAS ON MANY TRIPS TO EUROPE, ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES, AND SPENT FOURTEEN WINTERS IN PALM SPRINGS. JO ENJOYED BONSPIELS AND CONTINUED GOLFING UNTIL THE LAST TWO SEASONS. JO LOVED HORSES AND TRAVELLED TO MANY PLACES TO SEE HER GRANDSON WORK WITH HORSES.
JO WAS VERY INVOLVED IN HER COMMUNITY AND SERVED AS PAST PRESIDENT OF THE VULCAN LADIES GOLF CLUB, VULCAN LIONETTES, AND WAS TWO TIMES PRESIDENT OF THE LADIES AUXILIARY TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION AND WAS HONOURED ROYAL LADY TO THE ROYAL PURPLE. SHE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF VULCAN UNITED CHURCH, A LEADER FOR BOTH C.G.I.T AND EXPLORERS, UNITED CHURCH WOMEN AND SANG ALTO IN THE CHURCH CHOIR. JO WAS A RENOWNED COOK AND WAS QUITE CAPABLE AROUND THE FARM.
BESIDES HER HUSBAND AND LIFE LONG PARTNER HARRIS, JO IS SURVIVED BY HER LOVING DAUGHTER JEAN ANN (TED) HARTUNG OF VULCAN, THEIR CHILDREN AMY OF HONG KONG AND JESS (DEANNA), GREAT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN GREGORY AND MIRANDA HARTUNG ALL OF VULCAN, A SISTER LILA JEAN (FRED) STEPHENS OF TORONTO, TWO BROTHERS-IN-LAW FORD (ELMA) FISHER OF CRANBROOK AND CHARLES MILLS OF BROADVIEW, SASKATCHEWAN, FOUR NEPHEWS AND TWO NIECES.
JO WAS PREDECEASED BY TWO SISTERS LILLIAN MILLS IN 1998 AND MARIE FISHER IN 1945 AND HER PARENTS.
A CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE WILL BE HELD WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 13, 2000 AT 1:30 P.M. AT VULCAN UNITED CHURCH WITH REV. LORRAINE POWELL OFFICIATING.
INURNMENT TO FOLLOW AT VULCAN CEMETERY.
