ERNEST LORNE LUCAS PASSED AWAY JANUARY 29, 1996 AT CAMROSE, ALBERTA AT THE AGE OF 89 YEARS.
LORNE WAS BORN AT LONDON, ONTARIO OCTOBER 9, 1906. HE ATTENDED SCHOOL AT MIDDLESEX COUNTY AND GUELPH AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE WHERE HE GRADUATED AS A FIRST CLASS CHEESE MAKER IN 1921. HE SERVED WITH THE FIRST HUSSARS ARMY CORE IN LONDON. LORNE MARRIED HAZEL VERA MIFFLIN AT BELMONT, ONTARIO IN 1932. IN I943 HE CAME TO CHAMPION WITH A HARVEST CREW. HE DECIDED TO STAY AND HAZEL JOINED HIM LATER. HE FIRST WORKED ON GLEN CLEVER’S FARM AND THEN BEGAN WORKING FOR W. I. HARRIS OF HARRIS MOTORS IN CHAMPION OCTOBER 4, 1944. HE CONTINUED TO WORK FOR HARRIS MOTORS AS A CHRYSLER MASTER MECHANIC UNTIL RETIRING. HE CONTINUED TO LIVE IN CHAMPION UNTIL 1985 WHEN HE MOVED IN WITH HIS SON JERRY AT WILLIAMS LAKE THEN STAYED WITH HIS DAUGHTER RITA AT LAC LA BICHE. IN 1992 HE CAME TO CAMROSE TO THE ROSEHAVEN CARE CENTRE WHERE HE HAS RESIDED SINCE.
LORNE WAS A THIRTY-TWO YEAR MEMBER OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH #262, CHAMPION. HE ENJOYED GARDENING, HUNTING BUT MOSTLY FISHING WHICH HE DID OFTEN. IN HIS EARLY YEARS HIS HOBBY WAS ALSO HIS WORK, HE WAS ALWAYS WILLING TO SEARCH TO FIND OUT WHY AN ENGINE WOULD NOT WORK AND HOW TO MAKE IT WORK MORE EFFICIENTLY.
LORNE IS SURVIVED BY FIVE DAUGHTERS DOROTHY (LAWRENCE) POLSFOT OF EDMONTON, ALICE (KENNETH) CALOON OF MAGRATH, RITA CALLIOU OF LAC LA BICHE, DOLORES (DENNIS) McGOWAN OF VANCOUVER AND ZELDA (ELMER) STENSRUD OF DAYSLAND, THREE SONS JERRY (BARBARA) OF WILLIAMS LAKE, KEN (ROSEMARIE) OF CALGARY AND JOHN OF VANCOUVER, TWENTY-EIGHT GRANDCHILDREN, NUMEROUS GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, FOUR GREAT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, AND A SISTER LETA (EDWARD) WRIGHT OF STRATHMORE.
HE WAS PREDECEASED BY HIS WIFE HAZEL, A SON DON, FOUR SISTERS, TWO BROTHERS AND HIS PARENTS HERMAN AND ALBERTA.
A LEGION GRAVESIDE SERVICE WAS HELD FRIDAY FEBRUARY 2, 1996 AT 2 PM. AT CHAMPION CATHOLIC CEMETERY WITH REV. DOUG BARRIE AND MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION OFFICIATING.
HONOUR GUARD MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH 262, CHAMPION.
CASKET BEARERS WERE KEITH HARRIS, PAUL DE CLERCQ, GRANT WOLFE, LES KRASMAN, MIKE KULAS AND TERRY PENNEY.
