Walter Kushner, of Champion, Alberta passed away Thursday, December 2, 2004 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 80 years.
Walter was born October 2, 1924 at Yorkton Saskatchewan to Anthony and Helen Kushner. In 1941 at the age of 17 years he joined the Navy. Following his military service Walter worked as a high rigger for Ontario Hydro, had a mail route, moved to northern Manitoba where he drove a cat train. On May 1, 1955 Walter married Eleanor Bunes at Claresholm. They returned to the family farm where he worked with his father and later farmed his own land, he drove truck until beginning to work with Westburn Oil Company as a well driller until retiring in 1980 to Champion where he has resided since.
Walter was a very kind, generous and dedicated family man. He liked to read informative books, visit with people and tell his life stories to his grandchildren. Walter enjoyed working on vehicles, swimming, hiking, camping, gardening and yard work, sailing and flying. He was a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a member of the Audubon Society.
Beloved husband of wife Eleanor of Champion, loving father of a daughter Marcia (Dave) Hagedorn of Langdon, a son Craig (Deb) of Calgary, seven grandchildren Matthew, Tristan, Brianna, James, Nichole, David and Leah, a great grandson Michael, a brother Michael of Toronto, Ontario, two sisters Edna Kazakoff of Prince George, BC, Alice (Garth) Storey of Grandview, Manitoba, sister-in-law Jerry Kushner and numerous nieces and nephews.
Walter was predeceased by his son Kerry in 1975, four brothers Paul, Frank (Stella), Peter, Orest, a sister Sophie (Wilf) Barschel, a sister-in-law Rose and a brother-in-law Fred Kazakoff.
Funeral service Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the Champion Congregational Church, Champion with Pastor Wayne Lee and Pastor Bill Roycroft officiating.
Royal Canadian Legion – Navy Last Post Service.
Casket Bearers David Kushner, James Kushner, Dave Hagedorn, Bill Flemming, Jerry Bjornson and Richard Olson.
Internment Champion Cemetery.
