MARTHA KURTZ formerly of Champion passed away on February 4, 2004 at Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 93 years.

Martha was born to Jacob and Anna Klein in Brunnental, Russia on September 8, 1910.  Her family immigrated to the United States when Martha was two and then to Canada in 1918.  They resided in the Champion area.  Martha attended Yale School and Washington School and attended school until grade 12.  She then started working doing housework.

Martha met Andrew Kurtz in 1930 and they were married in 1932.  They had three children.  Because of Andrew’s job with C.P.R., they lived in Nemiscam, New Dayton, Kirkcaldy, Carmangay and Champion.  Martha continued to reside in Champion until moving to the Peter Dawson Lodge in 1997 and to Long Term Care, Vulcan Community Health Centre in 2001.

Martha loved her children and grandchildren and was always interested in what they were doing.  When Martha was asked what she thought, she would always tell you.

Martha was a homemaker who loved to cook and bake.  Sewing was something she also loved to do and did much sewing for others.  In her earlier years she always had some crocheting on the go.  Martha also loved to garden and had house plants.

Loving mother of a  son Andy Jr. (Lois) of Victoria, BC, two daughters Dorothy Kometz of Lethbridge and Marjorie Olson of Champion, eleven grandchildren, fifteen great grand children and two great great grandchildren, a sister-in-law Shirley Klein, good friend Elsie Pasolli and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha was predeceased by her husband Andrew, a grandson Wayne Olson, a great grandson Matthew Kurtz, her parents Jacob and Anna Klein, two sisters Marie (Ben) Dann and Esther Schiffner, three brothers Jake, Sam and William and two sons-in-law Doug Kometz and Pete Olson.

Funeral service was held Monday February 9, 2004 at 1:30 P.M. at the Champion Congregational Church with Rev. Wayne Lee officiating.

Casket bearers were John Kometz, Kevin Kurtz, Jesse Kurtz, Richard Olson, Dave Schneider and Don Gass.

Internment Champion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, tributes in Martha’s memory could be made to the Long Term Care Unit of the Vulcan Community Health Centre Box 299 Vulcan Alberta T0L 2B0 or Champion Cemetery Maintenance Association Box 99 Champion Alberta T0L 0R0.
