VELMA MAY KOCH, PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY FEBRUARY 24, 1998 AT VULCAN, ALBERTA AT THE AGE OF 78 YEARS.
VELMA WAS BORN JANUARY 7, 1920 IN WOODSTOCK, NEW BRUNSWICK, TO WALLACE AND ISADORA CHASE. SHE WAS RAISED IN THE WOODSTOCK AREA WITH HER BROTHERS AND SISTERS. IN 1943 SHE MARRIED WILBUR PORTER, TOGETHER THEY RESIDED AND RAISED THEIR FAMILY IN THE ST. STEPHEN AREA. VELMA WORKED AS A COOK AT A RESTAURANT AND IN 1965 WILBUR PASSED AWAY. IN 1967 VELMA MOVED TO VULCAN AND WORKED AS A COOK AT THE PETER DAWSON LODGE AND WORKED AT THE LEGION. SHE MET AND IN 1969 MARRIED MILTON CLARENCE KOCH OF VULCAN. THEY CONTINUED TO RESIDE IN VULCAN. SHE MOVED TO EXTENDICARE AND THEN TO THE LONG TERM CARE UNIT OF VULCAN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS
VELMA LOVED HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS. SHE ENJOYED CRAFTS INCLUDING MACRAME AND CERAMICS WHICH SHE PASSED OUT TO ALL HER FAMILY, TRIPS TO NEW BRUNSWICK WITH MILTON AND HER SISTER. AFTER LOSING HER SIGHT IN 1985, SHE LOVED TO SPEND TIME WITH MILTON, ESPECIALLY IN THE LATER YEARS WHEN SHE WAS IN THE WHEEL CHAIR, HE WOULD TAKE HER FOR WALKS. SHE ALSO ENJOYED LISTENING TO TALKING BOOKS. VELMA WAS AN INDEPENDENT PERSON WITH A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR, WHO SPOKE HER MIND. HER WARM, CARING, PERSISTENT PERSONALITY WILL BE SADLY MISSED.
VELMA WAS A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION LADIES AUXILIARY IN VULCAN FOR MANY YEARS.
VELMA IS SURVIVED BY HER LOVING HUSBAND MILTON KOCH OF VULCAN, TWO DAUGHTERS SANDRA VINING OF COALDALE AND SHARON COOK OF WALDORF, MARYLAND, A SON LARRY (LORRAINE) CHASE OF VULCAN, A BROTHER LEONARD (JEAN) CHASE OF LETHBRIDGE, A SISTER ANNA (PETE) RUPPERT OF LOMOND, NINE GRANDCHILDREN, EIGHTEEN GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, NUMEROUS NIECES AND NEPHEWS.
VELMA WAS PREDECEASED BY HER FIRST HUSBAND WILBUR, FIVE BROTHERS, ELWOOD, CHESTER, ASA, STANLEY, HARVEY, TWO SISTERS, SADIE AND MINA, HER NEPHEW BILL RUPPERT AND HER PARENTS.
