Hughes 1919 – 2007
Llewellyn “Lew” “Welchy” John Hughes formerly of Milo passed away October 16, 2007 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 87 years.
Lew was born at Calgary, Alberta to John and Ellen Hughes. He was raised on the family farm west of Milo. Lew continued to farm the family farm and drove school bus from the 1940’s until his retirement. He rented out the farmland to Keith Healy for eight years, then subdivided it and sold it to Lake McGregor Estates. Lew moved to Vulcan where he married Lillian Hostetler and adopted her three children Bruce, Deb and Arlie.
Lew loved to travel to Lomond to visit with his friends Jim, Penny, Smokie and Leona Jones. Lew moved to Coaldale with Iva Jones where he resided until Iva’s passing in 2003. Lew moved into the Sunny Side Lodge at Coaldale and moved to the Peter Dawson Lodge at Vulcan in 2006 where he resided until moving to the Long Term Care Unit at the Vulcan Community Health Centre until his passing.
Lew was a past member of the Milo Lions Club. His three great passions in life were golfing, cars and going to Las Vegas to gamble.
Lew is survived by a step daughter Debra Hughes of Vulcan, two step-sons Bruce of Vancouver Island and Arlie of Calgary, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a brother Floyd (Genevieve) Hughes of High River, a sister-in-law Lucy and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lew was predeceased by his wife Lillian, a brother LLoyd and his parents.
Memorial service was held Friday October 19, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at Vulcan United Church with Sue MacDonald D.M. officiating.
