HILZ, Mary Jane  1927 – 2003

Mary-Jane Hilz of Vulcan, Alberta passed away Monday, December 29 2003 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 76 years.

Mary-Jane was born at the Blackie Hospital on February 28, 1927 and grew up in the Herronton area. She met Bill in 1950 and three months later they were married in the Farrow United Church. Mary-Jane and her husband Bill farmed and raised their five children in the Vulcan area. She was busy with all aspects of farming including seeding and harvesting, tending to all sorts of livestock, and growing big gardens. Mary-Jane never missed a harvest, driving truck or combine and cooking her fantastic meals every day for the harvesters.

Mary-Jane gave her love of music to all her family. Besides being a soloist at many weddings and funerals, she taught music lessons and led choir groups at the United Church. Mary-Jane was also actively involved in the community and was a member of the Good Deeds Women’s Institute and the Royal Purple.

Mary-Jane will be lovingly remembered by her family and her friends. She was so caring of others and spent countless hours visiting the shut-ins. Mary-Jane always seemed to know when a phone call and a kind word were needed.

Mary-Jane is survived by her loving husband Bill, four daughters Penny (Leighton) Rushfeldt, Peggy (Doug) Hartman, Betty (Mark) Herron and Norma Reimer, a son Warren (Trish) Hilz and her eight grandchildren Matt (Andrea), Theresa (Chris), Chris, Nicole, Jim, Calvin, Brayden and Hayley. She is also survived by two sisters Marcella (Carl) Steiner and Paula (John) Simmons, two brothers George (Peggy) Randle and David (Maxine) Randle, a sister-in-law Louise Randle, a brother-in-law Ernie Norton and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary-Jane was predeceased by a daughter Terry Jane, two sisters Norma Norton and Lorraine Moore, two brothers James and Gerald; a sister-in-law June Randle; two brothers-in-law George Meadows and Tommy Moore and her parents.

Funeral service Friday January 2, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at Vulcan United Church with Rev. Henry Friesen officiating.

Casket bearers Matthew Rushfeldt, Theresa Rushfeldt, Chris Hartman, Nicole Hartman, Jim Herron, Calvin Hilz, Brayden Hilz and Hayley Hilz.

Cremation to follow service with inurement in the Vulcan Cemetery at a later date.
