HEGLAND, Richard Arlin  1949 – 2013

Richard Arlin Hegland passed away suddenly in his Vulcan home on September 10, 2013 at the age of 64 years.

Born in Vulcan, Alberta on March 4, 1949 Richard was the third child of Earl and Agnes Hegland and youngest brother to siblings Darlaine and David.  He attended Champion School and County Central High School in Vulcan, graduating in Canada’s Centennial year 1967.  Richard held several jobs over the years, but always stayed to true to his love of farming and ranching, first with his Dad and David at the old Travers homestead, then with David in Enchant, and most recently through helping Terry Rhodes and Gary Sokvitne.

Richard was an accomplished baseball and hockey player in his youth and continued to participate in hockey well into adulthood with the Vulcan Wheat Kings and Lomond Lakers.  Richard was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed many quiet mornings and winter days fishing and bird and big game hunting with friends and family every fall.

Richard is survived by his mother Agnes who was everything to him.  During his life, but especially for the last 15 years, he lovingly devoted himself to her care and happiness and his presence will be sadly missed.  Richard was a loving Uncle to Ginger and Gerald Deitz, Cory and Stacey Hegland and Jackie and Darin McKay and considered a surrogate grandparent by Nicole and Jaxson Deitz and Aliya Hegland.  Richard is also survived by his sister Darlaine (Gary) Mahoney and their large extended family of children and grandchildren.

Richard was predeceased by his nephew Patrick Mahoney, his father Earl, brother David and cousin and best friend Barry Hegland.

Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the Champion Community Hall.
