PHYLLIS HEGLAND, OF CHAMPION PASSED AWAY AUGUST 2, 2000 AT VULCAN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE AT THE AGE OF 78 YEARS.
PHYLLIS WAS BORN FEBRUARY 7, 1922 ON HER GREAT GRANDFATHER FRED ALCOCK’S FARM NEAR CHAMPION, THE ONLY CHILD OF DUANE AND MAY CHAMBERLAIN. IN 1927 HER FAMILY MOVED TO KARIMUIR, ALBERTA WHERE SHE STARTED SCHOOL AND IN 1929 RETURNED TO CHAMPION WHERE SHE COMPLETED HER SCHOOLING.
FOLLOWING GRADUATION PHYLLIS WORKED IN LOMOND AT THE SPECIAL AREAS OFFICE AND IN THE EARLY 1940’S SHE WORKED FOR SHORTY HARRIS AND MARTIN MATLOCK AS A BOOKKEEPER IN CHAMPION. IN 1942 SHE MARRIED RUSSELL HEGLAND AND TOGETHER THEY LIVED IN CHAMPION. PHYLLIS WORKED AS A SECRETARY FOR RAY SPEAKER DURING HIS TIME AS MLA.
PHYLLIS LOVED HER FAMILY AND SPECIAL TIMES THEY SHARED TOGETHER. SHE WAS A TRUE HISTORIAN AND A COLLECTOR OF LOCAL HISTORY SHE HAD COMPILED SEVERAL SCRAP BOOKS OVER THE YEARS. SHE COLLECTED SPOONS, WAS AN AVID READER, BUILDER OF JIG SAW PUZZLES, KNITTED MANY DISHRAGS FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS, SHE WAS AN AVID HORSE RACING FAN AND ATTENDED MANY RODEOS, SHE ESPECIALLY ENJOYED WATCHING THE BULL RIDING WHERE PHYLLIS AND RUSSELL MADE MANY NEW FRIENDS.
PHYLLIS WAS VERY INVOLVED WITH HER COMMUNITY. SHE WAS A LIFE MEMBER OF LADIES AUXILIARY TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH #262 CHAMPION, TWENTY-FIVE YEAR MEMBER OF THE ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR, WHERE SHE RECEIVED THE PRESIDENTS BAR AND PIN, SHE WAS LIFE LONG MEMBER OF THE UNITED CHURCH AND HELPED WITH MOST COMMUNITY SHOWERS AND FESTIVITIES. PHYLLIS ALSO SERVED AS CHAIRPERSON OF THE CLEVERVILLE CHAMPION HISTORY BOOK OF 1970. A HARD WORKING COMMUNITY MEMBER, SHE WILL BE SADLY MISSED BY ALL WHO KNEW HER.
BELOVED WIFE OF RUSSELL HEGLAND OF CHAMPION, LOVING MOTHER OF A DAUGHTER DIANE (LORNE) ECKLUND OF STETTLER, TWO SONS GORDON (SHARON) AND BARRY (LINDA) ALL OF CHAMPION, GRANDCHILDREN BRIAN (GLENNIS) ECKLUND OF STETTLER, BRENT ECKLUND OF TABER, CHERYL (CHRIS) TETZ OF SWALWELL, JoANN HEGLAND OF PINCHER CREEK, LISA HEGLAND OF LETHBRIDGE, DANYEL FODOR AND SHAWN FODOR OF CHAMPION, THREE GREAT GRANDCHILDREN TERRY ECKLUND, JORDON AND SAMANTHA TETZ.
PHYLLIS WAS PREDECEASED BY HER PARENTS.
