Vera Esther Hartung (Maetche), age 81 of Calgary, passed away with family by her side November 27, 2012 at the Prince of Peace Manor, Calgary, Alberta.
Funeral service Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 10:30 am at the Vulcan Cultural Recreation Centre (504 – 4 Ave. South, Vulcan, AB) with Dr. Henry Schorr officiating.
Private family Interment at Vulcan Cemetery with Pastor Peter Campbell officiating.
Vera was born in the locality of Mayton, near Torrington, Alberta to Fredrick and Emma Maetche on March 28, 1931. She attended school both in Torrington and Calgary. She met Emil Hartung while he was visiting Hillcrest Bible College, Medicine Hat, where Vera was a student. They were married July 16, 1954. They farmed east of Vulcan where they raised their three sons Murray, Garth & Cody. In 1974 they moved to town from the farm into the house that she designed.
Vera worked at the Vulcan Flower Shop and also as Activity Director at the Vulcan Extendicare. She was a member of the Vulcan Evangelical Church where she was active in the Women’s Ministries, sang solos, and acted in several drama productions. She was an encourager and a prayer warrior and loved by the congregation. She also supported many missionaries and charities throughout her life.
Vera was also involved with the community and was a member of the Extendicare Auxiliary. She participated in the bowling league trips to High River. She was known to many as the “classy” lady that always had an encouraging word for others. She enjoyed painting, ceramics, traveling, and playing games. She treasured time spent with her family and friends.
Vera is survived by her sister Ruth and brother Fred, three sons, Murray (Linda), Garth (Karen) and Cody (Denise) ,eight grandchildren Joel (Jodie) , Jess (Chuck), Jodilee, Rochelle, Danielle, Cole, Lane and Max, and two great grand-children Mason and Lewis. Vera is predeceased by her husband Emil, parents, three brothers, Albert, Alvin & David, and four sisters, Martha, Rachel, Eileen and Idella.
