Hartung, Helanda, of Vulcan, passed away unexpectedly at the Vulcan Hospital on September 18th, just one week after her 84th birthday.
She was born in Weyburn, SK, the 10th child of Herman & Huldine Deimert and eventually one of 13 siblings. At an early age she was introduced to the saving grace of Jesus Christ and accepted Him as her Savior, beginning a lifetime of faith and service in His name. She attended Hillcrest Bible College in Medicine Hat where she met Ed Hartung and they were married in 1953. The couple settled just a few miles east of Vulcan, set up a farm and raised a family. Ed and Helanda raised 5 children on the farm and taught each one the value of a day’s work and brought each one up to the knowledge of Jesus’s saving grace.
In 1992, Ed was killed in a tragic automobile accident and Helanda became the family leader. She continued to live at the family farm and guided and helped her children and the growing brood of grandchildren, who were her pride and joy and focus of her cooking and sewing. In 2010, she moved into the town of Vulcan and expanded her activities with her group of traveling buddies.
Helanda led her life in complete devotion to Jesus Christ as a prayer warrior and in service to all those around her.
Helanda is survived by her children: Bonnie (Len) Cioni, Bernice (Dale) Neuman, Yvonne (Kevin) Umscheid, Wendy (Larry) Vannatta, and Wesley (Deborah) Hartung; her pride and joy group of 15 grandchildren and their spouses and 11 great grandchildren (more on the way). She is also survived by brothers Louie (Ann) & Eric (Lenore), sisters Dena, Lorraine, Eileen (Kent) and Doreen (Al); sisters-in-law Eleanor (Nick), Irene and Marion (Ed) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Ed and her son-in-law Alvin Nelson.
A Memorial Service to honor Helanda’s dedication to her family, friends and Savior will be held on Saturday, September 23rd at the Champion Community Center at 2:00 pm.
Tributes in Helanda’s memory can be made to Teen Challenge Alberta (Box 24010, RPO Evergreen, Calgary, AB T2Y 0J9 OR Southern Alberta Bible Camp (Box 99, Lomond, AB T0L 1G0).
