Hammer, Richard “Dick” Carleton
January 19, 1932 – February 7, 2019

It is with heavy but grateful hearts that we announce the passing of our father Richard Hammer. Dick passed peacefully in his sleep at Vulcan Extendicare on February 7, 2019 at the age of 87 years.

Dick was born in Vulcan and spent his life living, working, and raising a family in the community. He worked for Revelstoke Lumber for 30 years before joining the staff of Alberta Recreation and Parks where he was employed until his retirement. Dick was an avid sports enthusiast, a curler, golfer, horse race handicapper, rodeo lover, football referee, follower of all sports, and he loved to walk the paths around town. He was a singer, a dancer, and a community builder through the Vulcan Lions club. Dick served on the Lions Executive and received their Lifetime Membership Award as recognition for his many years of service to his community.

Dick is survived by his sons and daughters in-law David and Mary, Ken and Brenda, Brent and Pam, his grandchildren Christopher, Matt, Sem, Alexis, Davis, and his great-grandchildren Ella and Bryn. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Hilda in 2006, his sister Elizabeth “Betty” in 1982, and his granddaughter Emily in 1992.

A Celebration of Dick’s life will occur later in the spring where family, friends, and community will be invited to remember him.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation to the Vulcan Lion’s Club, Box 717, Vulcan, AB T0L 2B0.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Wade and the staffs of Peter Dawson Lodge, the Vulcan Hospital Long Term Care and Vulcan Extendicare who tended to Dick’s comfort and needs in his later years.

Arrangements in care of Vulcan Funeral Home. Telephone 1-403-485-2633. E-mail condolences through www.vulcanfuneralhome.ca.

We’re so saddened to hear of your Dad’s passing. I have vivid memories of your
dad and my Dad (Orvel Webb) studying the racing digest, sometimes not even
talking. They had one of those enduring friendships that was so special. Your Dad
will be remembered fondly by Leo and I.
