Richard Walter “Dick” Groves of Champion passed away suddenly at Vulcan October 29, 2008 at the age of 47 years.
Dick was born August 24, 1961 at Vulcan to Keith and Barbara Groves. He attended Champion School for Grades 1-9 and the high school in Vulcan for Grades 10-12. Dick enjoyed playing football and curling in high school. After graduation in 1979, he went to Calgary where he worked as a courier. Dick decided to go back to school and attended SAIT taking Business Administration. From there he worked at different jobs in the construction industry until he started with Prudential Steel in 1985 as a pipe inspector. After working for Prudential for six years, Dick decided to go back to school. He graduated with Honors in Electronic Engineering from the DeVry Institute of Technology in Calgary having the second highest grade in his class. Dick worked as a cable technician then went back to work in the construction industry. He moved back to Champion in 2000 and worked as an equipment operator and truck driver. Dick started working in the Agricultural industry for Agricore and recently moved to UFA where he worked as a facility operator.
Dick was a member on the Village of Champion Council and was serving his second term. This enabled him to be on Waste Management, Champion Community Hall, Cemetery Maintenance and the Vulcan Business Development Committees.
Beloved son of Keith and Barbara Groves, brother of Maury, David (Susan) and Corey (Melanie), five nieces Samantha, Alyssa, Chloe, Arianna and Shayla, a nephew Steven, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral Service was held Tuesday November 4, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Champion Community Hall with Bruce Smith officiating.
Casket bearers were Al Culler, Dan Hunt, Jeff Groves, Chad Perley, Dick Ellis, Duane Cieslak, Les Groves and Eric Delude.
