Cathrine ‘Cay’ Grant (nee Lucas), of Vulcan, passed away peacefully at the Vulcan Community Health Centre on January 21, 2021 at the age of 94 years.
Cathrine was born June 21, 1926 in Lomond, Alberta to Thomas and Mary Ellen Lucas. She grew up on the family farm at Armada with her brothers Gordon, Bill and John.
Cay married Alex Grant on October 29, 1947. They raised seven children, twins Don & Doug (June 1949), Bev (March 1951) Rodger (Feb 1952) Karen (Dec 1954), Tom (July 1956) and Patricia (April 1959).
In 1987, Cay opened an accounting practice called Grant, Krystalowich and Bennett with Diane Krystalowich and Ann Bennett. She served as a councilor for two terms for the Town of Vulcan. In August 2000, Cay retired from the accounting practice.
In retirement, Cay enjoyed gardening, knitting, cross stitch and reading. She took great pleasure in telling people she has 16 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
In the spring of 2015, Cay made the decision to move from her home to the Peter Dawson Lodge where she spent her spare time reading, knitting mitts and visiting. She kept a running tally of how many mitts she had made and it was in the hundreds. Not wishing to burden her children with this decision, Cay made the choice to be placed in palliative care. Once the decision was made, she quietly and gracefully made her transition from this life on Thursday, January 21st.
Cay is survived by her children – Don (Jan) Grant, Doug (Tricia) Grant, Beverly Peterson, Rodger (Lorea) Grant, Karen (Bob) Thompson, Tom (Joan) Grant and Patricia (Dave) Stretz, 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Mary Ellen Lucas, infant sister Mary, brothers John, Bill (Mildred) and Gordon (Audrey) Lucas, husband Alex Grant, sisters – in law Kay (Carson) McKay and Betty (Bob) Martin.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a Private Family Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 30, 2021 at the Vulcan United Church, Sue MacDonald, D.M. officiating. Interment Vulcan Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vulcan County Health & Wellness Foundation, Box 28, Vulcan, AB T0L 2B0 OR The MS Society of Canada (AB/NWT), 9405 50 Street, Suite 150, Edmonton, AB T6B 2T4.

I am so grateful for knowing Cay and having such wonderful memories: neighbor, employer, friend 🙂 Warm Heart blessings to her family
Dear Cay Grant Family,
Please know our sympathies are for you on the passing of your dear Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. I remember what a gentle lady she was. When she was in Peter Dawson Lodge I never saw her in slacks…always dressed so neatly in her dresses. We know that you are cherishing your memories of her. Thinking of you all.

My condolences to all of the Grant family. Cay was a wonderful woman and a great accountant. I have many fond memories of her. My Dad, Allan Sinclair, enjoyed working with her on church finances. Karen and I shard Sunday School and High School.
She sounds amazing, and she left a legacy of a wonderful family too. I didn’t know her well but remember a happy, quiet person of dignity too.
Our sincere sympathy to all her family and many friends.
Dear Grant Family, we are so sorry for your loss. Please accept our prayers and condolences at this very difficult time. Ed and Joanne Kettenbach and Family
My sincere sympathy to the Grant families on the loss of Cay. She was a woman to be admired for her strength and abilities. I know my Dad relied on Cay’s accounting and income tax preparation for many years and he always spoke highly of her. Bless you all at this time.

Sorry to here of Aunty Cay’s passing. Always enjoyed a visit with her at the lodge. As she got older in years she reminded me of Gran Lucas. I think it was her always wearing a dress. Memories we need to hold onto to help us thru these sad times. It is hard to let a Mom or Granma go but it is harder to watch them suffer. She is at peace and reunited with her family. Thinking of you all ❤️
Dear Grant Family–I always enjoyed visiting with your Mom. She had a way of making me feel happy and that all was well. We were happy to have one of her grand-daughters be a good friend to one of our daughters. We send condolences to all of your family.

To Doug, Tom, , and all the members of the Grant family … my sincere sympathy goes out on the passing of Cay! She was a lovely lady and a highly valued resident of the County of Vulcan. As a professional accountant she served the people of the town and the surrounding districts well. As a member of the Armada, Lomond, and Vulcan communities she was appreciated and greatly cherished. She will be missed by many! Marvin Maronda of Lomond.
My condolences to all of Kay’s family.
She lived a full & busy life. I have fond memories of her weekly visits to the grocery store every Saturday morning we always enjoyed our chats.
Dear Grant Family,
Our condolences and thoughts are with you all in the loss of your Mother. As you know our families criss crossed with kids of similar ages and friendships, so we know what a trail blazer, hard working and non nonsense kind of Gal, Cay was. We will be thinking of you folks on Saturday and please know we remember your Mother with much fondness.
Sincere sympathies, Lori (Dahl) & Rod McFadden
