ELWOOD BAGSTAD GRANLIN, OF CHAMPION, DIED SUDDENLY FEBRUARY 3, 2001 AT VULCAN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE.
ELWOOD WAS BORN JUNE 28, 1911 AT CLARESHOLM, ALBERTA TO INGVOLD AND TILLIE GRANLIN. HE ATTENDED CHAMPION SCHOOL. IN 1918 HIS MOTHER PASSED AWAY AND HE REMAINED WITH HIS FATHER AND HIS SISTER GERTRUDE WENT TO LIVE WITH HIS AUNT IN STAVELY. WHILE IN SCHOOL HE USED TO SET UP MODEL T FORD CARS FOR HIS UNCLE MARVIN WHO OWNED THE FORD GARAGE IN CHAMPION. LATER HE HAULED GRAVEL WHEN THE ORIGINAL HIGHWAY 23 WAS BEING BUILT NORTH OF CHAMPION. ELWOOD ALSO WORKED ON DRILLING WATER WELLS AND ON A TEST DRILLING OUTFIT FOR AN OIL COMPANY. HE ALSO SET UP WINDMILLS AND SPENT SOME TIME TRUCKING. IN 1931 HE MARRIED Mae RENA JOHANSON AND TOGETHER THEY LIVED ON THE FARM EAST OF CHAMPION AND RAISED THEIR FAMILY. Mae RENA PASSED AWAY SUDDENLY IN 1962. ELWOOD MARRIED MARIE MATLOCK IN 1963.
ELWOOD LOVED FARMING AND BEING A FARMER, HE WAS ALSO VERY INVOLVED WITH HIS COMMUNITY. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE CHAMPION LIONS CLUB SINCE 1948, AND WHEN THE LIONS LITTLE BOW PARK PROJECT BEGAN, ELWOOD BUILT THE ROAD DOWN THE HILL TO THE PARK IN 1954. HE ALSO CANVASSING FOR RURAL ELECTRIFICATION, TELEPHONE, THE UNTIED CHURCH BUILDING WHICH HE DUG THE BASEMENT FOR AS WELL AS THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, HE HELPED WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CURLING RINK.
BELOVED HUSBAND TO MARIE GRANLIN OF CHAMPION, LOVING FATHER OF A SON LaVERNE (KATHY) GRANLIN OF CHAMPION, DAUGHTER ELAINE (GARTH) ENERSON, SIX GRANDDAUGHTERS PAMELA ENERSON (JASON REID), JULIE (BART) MATLOCK ALL OF LANGDON, SANDI (TRENT) O’REILY OF MEDICINE HAT, DIANNA ALLRED (STUART CAMPBELL) OF CALGARY, SUZANNE (SCOTT) MITCHELL OF VULCAN AND ZONA (ROBERT) CULP OF VULCAN, SEVENTEEN GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, A SISTER GERTRUDE SMITH OF CALGARY, TWO SISTERS-IN-LAW SUE BERGER OF CAMPBELL RIVER AND FLORENCE JOHANSON OF EDMONTON, A BROTHER-IN-LAW WILBUR (BETTY) MATLOCK OF CHAMPION, NUMEROUS COUSINS, NIECES AND NEPHEWS.
ELWOOD WAS PREDECEASED BY HIS MOTHER TILLIE IN 1918, FATHER INGVALD IN 1955 FIRST WIFE Mae RENA IN 1962, A GRANDSON KENNETH IN 1978, A STEP BROTHER GORDON BERGER, THREE BROTHERS-IN-LAW JOHNSTON SMITH, GEORGE JOHANSON AND GERALD (ALICE) MATLOCK.
CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE WILL BE HELD SUNDAY FEBRUARY 11, 2001 AT 1:30 P.M. AT CHAMPION EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH, WITH REV. LORRAINE POWELL OFFICIATING.
