GRAHAM, Muriel Annie 1927 – 2004

Muriel Annie Graham passed away on November 4, 2004 at her home in Vulcan, Alberta at the age of 77 years.

Muriel was born July 27, 1927 at Nelson, BC to William (Bill) and Hazel Goulding. Most of her childhood years were spent at Rosedale, Alberta where her father was the CPR Station agent. After graduating from high school at Rosedale, she enrolled in nursing at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. She graduated as part of the class of 1949 (two). Muriel nursed in Edmonton, Medicine Hat and Vulcan. While nursing at Vulcan, she met the love of her life; a dashing, fun-loving farmer by the name of Glenn Graham.

The hospital at Medicine Hat offered Muriel a scholarship to further her nursing education. She left Vulcan for Vancouver where she obtained her teaching certificate. Muriel then returned to Medicine Hat to teach nursing for a year. Glenn and Muriel were married in Medicine Hat on July 10, 1954 after Muriel had fulfilled her teaching obligations.

Muriel adapted to rural life and stayed busy. She was dedicated to her community where she served with the Vulcan Ambulance, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Vulcan Extendicare Auxiliary. In 1987-88 Muriel was Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Alberta, Order of the Eastern Star. Muriel was also dedicated to her church work and spent much of her time with the United Church Women and the United Church Sunday School.

Spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren, was Muriel’s passion. In the last few years when she could not get out on her own, Muriel felt blessed by everyone that took the time to phone and visit. She continued to give of herself despite her illness. During the last week of her life, Muriel spent time visiting a friend in the hospital and finding ways to help the many groups she was part of.

Muriel leaves behind her loving husband of fifty years, Glenn, a daughter Noreen and Randal Roberts, a son William Graham, four grandchildren Sabrina Spencer, Eldon, Russell and Glenn Graham, a sister Jean Taylor and numerous friends and extended family. She was well loved and will be missed greatly.

Muriel was predeceased by a brother Bill Goulding, a daughter-in-law Angela Graham and her parents Hazel and Bill Goulding.
