GARRIOCK-CANNING, Edith  1921 – 2011

Edith Garriock Canning formerly of Milo passed away May 27, 2011 at Didsbury, Alberta at the age of 89 years.

Edith was born August 23, 1921 on the family homestead at Arrowwood, third child of John and Annie Goldthorpe. She attended Eastway School for ten years when she quit to stay at home and help her mother on the farm. She assisted with the cooking and cleaning and chores for several years due to her mothers failing health. She eventually began working for numerous farmers throughout the community as a homemaker. In the spring of 1943 while working at Castle’s, Alberta on a sheep camp she met Archie Garriock and they were married in June of 1944. They began their lives together north of Bassano working on a horse ranch with 2500 head of horses. Archie worked with the animals and Edith was a homemaker for the family and ranch hands. They worked the ranch until moving to the Brooks area in the spring of 1946 where they resided until moving to Oyen in 1953 where Edith stayed at home and raised her family. In 1958 they moved to the Atlee area where they bought and ran a grocery store for five years until the business was destroyed by a fire in March of 1963. After the fire Edith began working for the Mitchener Centre in Red Deer and lived in Blackfalds, Penhold and eventually moved to Red Deer in 1982. In 1983 Archie passed away and she continued working at the Centre until retiring in 1984. Following her retirement she remained in Red Deer until July of 1998 when she moved to Calgary and then to Milo in May of 2001… where she moved to Didsbury and married Lawrence Canning June 26, 2004 and has continued to reside in Didsbury since.

Edith loved her family and spending time with them. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, having made afghans for all of her children and grandchildren, sewing, making numerous wedding ensembles over the years and handicrafts of all kinds, gardening and canning.

Loving mother of a daughter Norma (Jerry) Irwin of Calgary, four sons Wesley (Mary Lou) of Vulcan, Don (Arla) of Magrath, John (Ethel) of Drumheller, Dan (Leanne) of Abbotsford, B.C., twelve grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two sisters Mary Hoffman of Leduc, Lorraine Stumpf of Milo, a brother Mervin (Frances) Goldthorpe of High River, twelve grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Edith was predeceased by her husband Archie in 1983, a brother Hirst in 1986, three brothers-in-law Ken Stumpf in 1980, Harriet in 2001(Len in 1991) White, Martin Hoffman in 1996 and her parent

At Edith’s request A small family gathering will follow the cremation at St. Aldhelm’s Anglican Church 300 Centre St. Vulcan. June 12 ,2011 at 2 P.m.
