EDITH KATHERINE FRENCH, PASSED AWAY AT HER HOME IN VULCAN, ALBERTA APRIL 16, 1996 AT THE AGE OF 90 YEARS.
EDITH WAS BORN AUGUST 19, 1905 IN AURORA COUNTY, SOUTH DAKOTA. SHE ATTENDED SCHOOL AT CORSICA, SOUTH DAKOTA AND CAME TO STRASBOURG, SASKATCHEWAN IN 1915 WITH HER PARENTS, BROTHER AND SISTER. SHE MARRIED JOHN FRENCH IN DECEMBER OF 1927. TOGETHER THEY MOVED TO BATHOON, SASKATCHEWAN AND RETURNED TO STRASBOURG IN 1930. IN 1941 THEY MOVED TO EDMONTON, THEN TO THE VULCAN AREA IN 1942. EDITH WORKED AS A COOK FOR JIM YEE AT THE VICTORY CAFE AND LATER BOUGHT THE RESTAURANT FROM HIM. SHE OPERATED THE RESTAURANT FOR A SHORT TIME THEN CONVERTED IT TO A VARIETY STORE IN THE EARLY 1950’S. THE STORE WAS SOLD IN 1953 AND THEY MOVED OUT TO THE BOYD MCKAY FARM. EDITH RAISED CHICKENS AND SOLD EGGS AND LATER THEY BOUGHT THE BILL AND OPAL LUCAS FARM IN THE REID HILL DISTRICT. IN 1981 EDITH RETURNED TO LIVE IN TOWN WHERE SHE HAS RESIDED SINCE.
EDITH WAS A VERY HOSPITABLE, CARING, GIVING PERSON WHO SPOKE HER MIND FREELY. SHE ENJOYED KNITTING, CROCHETING, PLAYING CARDS AND GARDENING.
EDITH WAS A MEMBER OF THE FRIENDSHIP CLUB, VULCAN DROP-IN CENTRE WHERE SHE SPENT A LOT OF TIME. SHE ALWAYS ADJOURNED THE MEETINGS AT THE DROP-IN CENTRE, THE CHAIRMAN WOULD SAY “OK EDITH, DO YOUR THING” AND SHE VERY PROUDLY WOULD SAY “MEETING ADJOURNED”. EDITH WAS A VERY INDEPENDENT WOMAN, SHE SERVED MEALS ON WHEELS IN HER EARLY YEARS. DESPITE HER VERY POOR VISION, SHE CONTINUED TO LIVE IN HER OWN HOME, GOING SHOPPING AND TRIPS TO THE DROP-IN CENTRE.
BELOVED MOTHER OF A SON DALE AND HIS WIFE JANET OF ELKFORD, B.C, A DAUGHTER LORRAINE RIVETT OF WILKIE, SASK., SIX GRANDCHILDREN JIM (PEGGY) FRENCH, PAT (HARRY) McLEAN, DONNA (BILL) WALBY, MERLA (LARRY) GOODALL, KATHERINE (LLEW) DAVIES AND TERRY (JAMES) ZIMMER, TEN GREAT GRANDCHILDREN; RYAN FRENCH, MEREAN AND JENNEL WALBY, DRAYTON AND DELANIE GOODALL, DUANA AND (CHRIS) ARCHER, AARON AND MICAH DAVIES, SARAH AND JESSICA ZIMMER, TWO GREAT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN MANAH ARCHER AND JANAY GOODALL AND MANY NIECES, NEPHEWS AND FRIENDS.
CELEBRATION OF HER LIFE SERVICE SATURDAY APRIL 20, 1996 AT 2 P.M. AT VULCAN UNITED CHURCH WITH REV. DON WATT OFFICIATING. CREMATION.
