LEONARD ALBERT “LEN” ENGEN, OF VULCAN PASSED AWAY AT VULCAN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE ON FEBRUARY 20, 2000 AT THE AGE OF 83 YEARS.
LEONARD WAS BORN JUNE 1, 1916 AT MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA TO ARTHUR AND ANNA ENGEN. HE MOVED WITH HIS PARENTS TO VULCAN AT THE AGE OF THREE. HE RECEIVED HIS SCHOOLING IN THE REED HILL DISTRICT. FOLLOWING SCHOOL LEN WORKED AS A HIRED HAND ON A FARM IN THE SAME AREA FOR FIVE YEARS. IN 1940 HE WENT TO WORK FOR THE COUNTY WITH HIS FATHER AS ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKERS BUILDING AND LOOKING AFTER THE ROADS. IN 1945 LEONARD MARRIED MARION SHORT. IN 1948 HE BOUGHT HIS OWN FARM FIFTEEN MILES EAST OF VULCAN WHERE HE FARMED UNTIL RETIRING FROM FARMING IN 1982. LEONARD HAS CONTINUED TO RESIDE IN VULCAN EVER SINCE.
LEONARD ENJOYED WORKING IN HIS VEGETABLE GARDEN. HE ALSO ENJOYED FISHING AND IN HIS EARLIER YEARS TOGETHER WITH MARION THEY SPENT MANY WONDERFUL TIMES FISHING AT BEAVER MINES. LATER HE FISHED IN THE RESERVOIR IN VULCAN. HE ALSO ENJOYED HIS TIME SHARED WITH HIS FRIENDS AT THE LEGION PLAYING RUMMY, POKER AND CRIB.
LEONARD WAS A LIFE MEMBER OF THE BENEVOLENT AND PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS LODGE # 121 VULCAN, AND WAS AN HONORARY MEMBER OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH 21 VULCAN.
BELOVED HUSBAND OF MARION OF VULCAN, TWO SONS ROBERT (ANNA) AND CHARLES ALL OF CALGARY, GRANDDAUGHTER KRISTY AND GRANDSON ROBERT BOTH OF CALGARY, A BROTHER JOHN (CECILE) ENGEN OF VULCAN, TWO SISTERS AGNES MORSETH OF VULCAN AND HARRIET (BOB) DEITZ OF MILO, NUMEROUS NIECES AND NEPHEWS.
LEONARD WAS PREDECEASED BY THREE BROTHERS BILL, GORDON AND VICTOR AND HIS PARENTS.
UPON LEONARD’S REQUEST NO SERVICE WILL BE HELD.
CREMATION.
