AGNES HELEN “NAN” DEGENSTEIN PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY AT THE HIGH RIVER HOSPITAL ON AUGUST 18, 1990 AT THE AGE OF 75 YEARS.

NAN WAS BORN AT BERRY HILL FARM, CUMMINGSTONE, SCOTLAND ON JANUARY 24, 1915 WHERE SHE MET HER FIRST HUSBAND ALLAN SULLIVAN, WHO WAS HIS FROM HANNA, IN 1942. THEY WERE MARRIED IN 1944. ALLAN WAS SERVING HIS COUNTRY WHEN HIS LIFE WAS TAKEN ONLY SEVEN MONTHS AFTER. NAN CAME TO HANNA IN 1947 TO MEET ALLAN’S PARENTS WHERE SHE STAYED AND WORKED UNTIL SHE MET AND MARRIED SENO DEGENSTEIN IN MARCH OF 1948. THEY CAME TO VULCAN IN 1950 WHERE SHE HAS RESIDED SINCE.

NAN WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE VULCAN CURLING CLUB UNTIL RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS PLACED HER IN A WHEELCHAIR IN 1969. SHE WAS A VERY ACTIVE AND DETERMINED LADY WHO LET NOTHING STAND IN HER WAY.

SHE WAS A PROUD MEMBER OF THE ORDER OF THE ROYAL PUPLE, THE LADIES AUXILIARY TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION WHERE SHE SERVED A TERM AS PRESIDENT.

FROM HER WHEELCHAIR, SHE TOOK RESPONSIBILITY FOR MAKING “HELPING HANDS” AND “MEALS ON WHEELS” PROGRAMS WORK IN VULCAN, UNTIL ORGANIZATIONS TOOK THEM OVER. SHE ALSO RECEIVED AND DISPENSED CALLS FOR “AA” UP UNTIL THE TIME SHE WAS HOSPITALIZED.

NAN IS SURVIVED BY HER SON LARRY WHO IS IN A COMA IN A CALGARY HOSPITAL FOLLOWING AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT EARLY THIS YEAR, HIS WIFE MELANIE AND THEIR SON RYAN WHO WAS BORN IN JULY OF THIS YEAR, A BROTHER JIM IN SCOTLAND, NUMEROUS NIECES AND NEPHEWS IN SCOTLAND AND AUSTRALIA AND HER CAT, “RAJA” WHO WAS HER CONSTANT COMPANION AND FRIEND.

SHE WAS PREDECEASED BY HER FIRST HUSBAND ALLAN SULLIVAN, HER SECOND HUSBAND SENO DEGENSTEIN IN 1977, THREE SISTERS JEAN IN AUSTRALIA, KATE AND PAULY IN SCOTLAND, FOUR BROTHERS JOHN, ALEC, GEORGE AND SAMMY, AND HER PARENTS.

MEMORIAL SERVICES WERE HELD AT VULCAN UNITED CHURCH ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1990 AT 2 PM WITH REV. BEV HILL OFFICIATING.

CREMATION. HER ASHES WILL BE RETURNED TO HER HOMELAND OF SCOTLAND FOR INURNMENT.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, IF FRIENDS DESIRE, DONATIONS MAY BE MADE TO MEALS ON WHEELS, C/O VULCAN LEGION IN HER MEMORY.
