LEONARD MANSFIELD CHASE FORMERLY OF LOMOND, ALBERTA PASSED AWAY AT VULCAN, ALBERTA FEBRUARY 25, 2002 AT THE AGE OF 84 YEARS.
LEONARD WAS BORN JUNE 15, 1917 AT WOODSTOCK, NEW BRUNSWICK TO WALLACE AND ISADORA CHASE. HE ATTENDED SCHOOL AND WORKED IN THE AREA UNTIL JOINING THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES, ARMY IN 1940. HE WAS STATIONED AT VALCARTIER, QUEBEC AND LATER ASSIGNED OVERSEAS WITH THE ANTI TANK REGIMENT UNTIL RETURNING HOME IN 1945. HE MOVED TO LOMOND AT FIRST, WORKING AS PART OF A HARVEST CREW, HE ALSO WORKED AT THE LOMOND SERVICE GARAGE FOR A SHORT WHILE, THEN AS A CARPENTER WITH HIS FATHER WALLACE CHASE UNTIL 1950. WHEN HE BECAME POSTMASTER AT THE LOMOND POST OFFICE AND AFTER THIRTY-TWO YEARS RETIRED. LEONARD CONTINUED WORKING AS MAINTENANCE FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS FOR A FEW MORE YEARS AND DROVE SCHOOL BUS PART-TIME. IN 1997 JEAN AND LEONARD MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE, THEN IN 2000 MOVED TO VULCAN WHERE THEY HAVE RESIDED SINCE.
LEONARD LOVED HIS FAMILY AND ENJOYED LIFE. HE WAS INVOLVED IN HIS COMMUNITY AND SERVED ON VILLAGE COUNCIL FROM 1974 TO 1977, ON THE SCHOOL BOARD FOR FIVE YEARS. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE LOMOND LIONS CLUB WHERE HE SERVED AS SECRETARY FOR TEN YEARS, A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH #21, VULCAN WHERE HE SERVED AS PRESIDENT AND PAST PRESIDENT.
BESIDES HIS LOVING WIFE JEAN LEONARD IS SURVIVED BY TWO DAUGHTERS LOIS (RALPH) RICHARDSON OF LAC LA NONNE, AB. AND CHARLOTTE (BOB) NIMZ OF KIRKCALDY, A SON TERRY (BONNIE) OF CHERHILL, AB., NINE GRANDCHILDREN, TEN GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, TWO GREAT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, A BROTHER LARRY (LORRAINE) CHASE OF VULCAN, A SISTER ANNA (PETE) RUPERT OF LOMOND, A SISTER-IN-LAW ELVA TEASDALE OF CALGARY, NUMEROUS NIECES AND NEPHEWS.
LEONARD WAS PREDECEASED BY HIS FATHER IN 1966, MOTHER IN 1977, FIVE BROTHERS, THREE SISTERS AND A NEPHEW.
FUNERAL SERVICE FRIDAY MARCH 1, 2002 AT 3 P.M. AT THE VULCAN LEGION HALL WITH REV. DOUG BARRIE OFFICIATING.
INTERMENT FIELD OF HONOUR, VULCAN CEMETERY.
