ALICE ELIZABETH BOYD nee: STONEHOUSE, BELOVED WIFE OF THE LATE FRANCES WILLIAM “FRANK” BOYD, WITH WHOM SHE SHARED SIXTY-NINE YEARS OF MARRIED LIFE, PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY AT THE VULCAN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER ON JANUARY 7, 2000 AT THE AGE OF 92 YEARS.

ALICE WAS BORN AUGUST 28, 1907 AT SUTTON, ONTARIO THE ELDEST OF TEN CHILDREN TO DEFOREST AND EDNA STONEHOUSE. SHE ATTENDED SCHOOL IN ONTARIO AND AT THE AGE OF FIFTEEN SHE BEGAN DOING HOUSEWORK AND CARING FOR CHILDREN. SHE MET FRANK BOYD IN 1925 WHILE HE WAS HOME VISITING FAMILY, HE RETURNED TO ONTARIO THE FOLLOWING YEAR AND ON MARCH 2, 1926 THEY WERE MARRIED. THEY MOVED ONTO FRANK’S RENTED FARM IN THE ARMADA DISTRICT AND IN THE SPRING OF 1928 THEY BOUGHT THEIR FARM, AND OVER THE NEXT TWENTY YEARS THEY RAISED THEIR EIGHT CHILDREN. IN THE FALL OF 1962 THEY SOLD THE FARM TO THEIR YOUNGEST SON AND MOVED INTO THE TOWN OF LOMOND WHERE THEY LIVED FOR THIRTY ONE YEARS. IN 1993 THEY MOVED TO PETER DAWSON LODGE, FRANK PASSED AWAY IN 1995. ALICE MOVED INTO THE LONG TERM CARE UNIT OF THE VULCAN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE THIS PAST YEAR WHERE SHE HAS RESIDED SINCE.

ALICE LOVED HER FAMILY AND TREASURED COMMUNICATING THROUGH LETTERS, SHE HAD WRITTEN THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS TO FAMILY AND SHUT-IN FRIENDS, SHE HAD SAVED LETTERS FROM THE WAR YEARS AND RETURNED THEM BACK TO HER BROTHERS IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, THEY WERE SURPRISED AND FOUND IT HARD TO BELIEVE SHE HAD KEPT THEM ALL THESE YEARS. DURING THE THIRTIES ALICE WAS CREATIVE TO KEEP THEIR HOME UP TO HER STANDARDS. SHE WAS INTRODUCED TO THE CONVENIENCE OF ELECTRICITY AND THE TELEPHONE IN 1962. SHE ENJOYED MAKING QUILTS, HAVING MADE OVER TWO HUNDRED QUILTS AND DONATED AT LEAST TWENTY NINE OF THEM TO THE LUTHERAN CHURCH AS WELL AS PROVIDING ALL OF HER FAMILY MEMBERS WITH ONE. SHE SEWED FROM AN EARLY AGE, SHE MADE CHILDREN’S CLOTHING AS WELL AS SEWING FOR BACHELORS. ALICE ALSO ENJOYED FANCY WORK AND ARTEX PAINTING. IN HER YOUNGER YEARS, SHE WOVE, BRAIDED, AND HOOKED RUGS USING AVAILABLE MATERIALS.

ALICE WAS A MEMBER OF THE ARMADA COMMUNITY CLUB FOR FIFTY FIVE YEARS, AND THE LOMOND COMMUNITY CLUB FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS. SHE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE ENGLISH CHURCH GUILD FOR THIRTY YEARS UNTIL IT DISBANDED, THE LOMOND SUNSHINE DROP IN CENTRE.

LOVING MOTHER OF FIVE DAUGHTERS VERNA SANDS OF VANCOUVER, RUTH (RICHARD) RITTENHOUSE OF LETHBRIDGE, EILEEN (FRANK) WIEDEMAN OF VICTORIA, VAL (DON) FREDLEY OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, BONNIE REED OF EDMONTON, TWO SONS GORDON (DOROTHY) OF HANNA AND HARVEY (SYLVIA) OF LOMOND, A BROTHER HOWARD (HILDA) STONEHOUSE , TWO SISTERS RUBY FRETZ AND MARION WALLACE ALL OF ONTARIO, TWENTY FIVE GRANDCHILDREN, FORTY GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, TWO GREAT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, NUMEROUS NIECES AND NEPHEWS.

BESIDES HER HUSBAND, FRANK, ALICE WAS PREDECEASED BY AN INFANT SON MURRAY IN 1970, TWO INFANT BROTHERS, AN INFANT SISTER MARJORY, A SISTER ALVA STAMPER AND TWO BROTHERS JOHN AND HARVEY STONEHOUSE AND HER PARENTS.

FUNERAL SERVICE TUESDAY JANUARY 11, 2000 AT 2:00 P.M. AT VULCAN UNITED CHURCH WITH REV. LORRAINE POWELL OFFICIATING.

HONORARY BEARERS WERE ALL OF ALICE’S FRIENDS.

CASKET BEARERS WERE GRANDSONS OWEN BOYD, BOB BOYD, JIM BOYD, ROY BOYD, DENNIS BOYD AND DALE BOYD.

INTERMENT VULCAN CEMETERY.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS TRIBUTES IN ALICE’S MEMORY MAY BE MADE TO EITHER THE CANADIAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION 210-D, 12TH “A” ST. N LETHBRIDGE, T1H 2J1 OR THE CHARITY OF YOUR CHOICE.
