BACH, Margaret Agnes “Peggy” 1925 – 2018

Bach, Margaret Agnes “Peggy”, of Champion, passed away surrounded by family at the Vulcan Community Health Centre on May 28, 2018 at the age of 93 years.

Margaret “Peggy” Bach was born in Fuerty, Co. Roscommon, Ireland, February 8th, 1925, to James and Katy Murray. She grew up on the family farm and lived there until she went to London during the war as a nurse. She experienced the hardships of war, including a bomb landing in the building across the street.

She met RCAF Sergeant Richard “Bud” Bach in London, where they were married in 1945. Peggy came to Canada in 1946 on an ocean liner full of War Brides. A train from Halifax across the country delivered her to Champion, Alberta, the area where she spent the rest of her life.

Peggy and Bud farmed together in Champion until Bud’s untimely passing in 1980, She stayed on the farm until 1992, and then moved to a house in Champion. During all her years in Champion, she was very involved with her church and the Royal Canadian Legion Women’s Auxiliary. In 1997, the Legion chose to honour Peggy with the rarely given and highly respected Meritorious Service Award, the highest honour that the Legion awards to Women’s Auxiliary members.

All who knew her, knew of her dedication as a volunteer worker and her endless good nature. In spite of dealing with health challenges most of her life, Peggy never let that slow her down. Diagnosed with ALS nearly 20 years ago, she continued to strive and care for others, even as the slow onset of the disease limited her physical abilities.

Her health issues eventually led her to move to Peter Dawson Lodge in Vulcan in 2008, and eventually to long term care at Vulcan Regional Hospital. Always active, she was a common sight, charging down the street with her walker, or later, involved with crafting and social activities. She made friends wherever she went.

She is survived by her sister Kathleen, sons Don and David (Dianne), grandchildren Kelly (Jim), Emily, Regina, Grayson, Megan and Christie, and great-granddaughter Sophia. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Luke and Martin, sister Annie Mae, her husband Bud and daughter Joan.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at 11 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Champion, AB , Fr. Tim Boyle Celebrant. Interment Champion Cemetery.

Tributes in Peggy’s memory can be made to the Vulcan Health Centre Palliative Care Unit, Box 299 OR Vulcan County Health & Wellness Foundation, Box 28, Vulcan, AB T0L 2B0.

Arrangements in care of Vulcan Funeral Home. Telephone 1-403-485-2633. E-mail condolences through www.vulcanfuneralhome.ca.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THE THE BACH FAMILY ON THE LOSS OF YOUR MAM. OUR MOTHER WAS ROSE KELLY (SCARDANE) WHO WAS A FIRST COUSIN OF YOUR MAMS. HER MOTHER WAS NORA MURRAY AUNT OF PEG’S. WE CAN RECALL THE EXCHANGE OF CHRISTMAS CARDS BETWEEN OUR MAM AND HER WHEN WE WERE YOUNG. MAY HER GENTLE SOUL REST IN PEACE AND MAY YOU BE CONSOLED AT HIS SAD TIME.

To all of Peggy’s family so sorry to hear of this loss another true lady gone from our midst.
I always enjoyed visiting with Peggy over the years.
The last time was around the end of April when we took some residents from Extendicare over to Long Term for a visit.
Betty Matlock & Peggy visited together.
