Leona Akitt passed away peacefully at the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre in Claresholm on April 29, 2023 at the age of 97 years.
Leona was born on the Rosenkranz homestead east of Carmangay on September 12, 1925. She was married to Bert Akitt in 1953 and came to live at what became Wolf Coulee Ranch, located east of Carmangay until 1989. They then bought a house in Vulcan and took up residence there, but sadly Bert passed away shortly thereafter. Leona continued to make her home in Vulcan until 2013. She moved to Cottonwood Village in Claresholm where she had a nice little suite with assisted living. Her last year was spent in Willow Creek Continuing Care.
Leona was known for her love for her family, extending to her numerous nieces and nephews. She knew all the birthdays and there were many phone calls and cards sent over the years. She practiced her gift of hospitality opening their/her home for meals and a bed as well.
She also had a love for flowers and beautified her yard wherever she lived. After moving from the farm and the passing of her husband Bert, she took up new hobbies of painting and woodwork. She created many beautiful paintings and wood working projects for family and friends.
Leona is survived by three daughters Linda (Gordon) Johnston, Virginia (Peter) Beckner, and Trudy ( Dale) Andrews. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, one brother William Rosenkranz, one sister in law Pauline Rosenkranz and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeased by her loving husband of 36 years, Bert Akitt ,1989, and by her son Eldon Akitt in 1987. She was also predeceased by her parents Gertrude and John Rosenkranz and her sisters Emma, Marie, Gertrude, Elsie, Evelyn, and Rosemarie and her brother John.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 1:30 pm at the Champion Congregational Church. Interment Carmangay Cemetery with luncheon at the church to follow.
