LAKE, Jane Brinston 1971 – 2024

Jane Brinston Lake (Smith) passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024 at South Health Campus Calgary at the age of 52 years.

Jane was born on December 29, 1971 to parents Edward and June Smith. Jane spent her childhood in Calgary in various communities in the city, spending the beginning of her life in Bridgeland, then moving to Radisson Heights, and finally to Marlborough. After getting married, she moved to Huntington then in 2007 Scott, Jane and Vic moved out to Vulcan where she spent the remainder of her life. She went to high school at Crescent Heights in Calgary and graduated in 1989 where she earned multiple student awards.

In 1996, Jane received a degree in Business Office skills from The Career College in Calgary. She earned a degree with Honors as a Medical Office Assistant with Unit Clerk specialty at Calgary’s Academy of Learning in March of 2003 where she earned several awards. She worked as a custodian at Livingstone House Condominium in Calgary. She also worked as a Unit Clerk at the Alberta Health Services Shaganappi complex as well as the Vulcan Community Health Centre. Jane formed a cleaning business with her husband Wilfred Scott Lake, known as The Great Lake’s Cleaning Services. She worked as a Janitor for the Vulcan Trek Station, Vulcan Public Library, Vulcan Town Office, for a year. From 2009 to 2011, she cleaned for the Vulcan Post Office and Richardson Pioneer. In July of 2019, she started working at the Vulcan Peter Dawson Lodge.

Jane often looked after her nephew, Kyle Hinsberger. She was married on July 12, 2003 to Wilfred Scott Lake and on December 5th, 2003, she gave birth to a baby girl known as Vic (Amber) Krystal Lake. Jane had many cats during her lifetime, the first of whom was closest to her heart – Duchess, a Sealpoint Siamese cat. Soon after, a Bengal cat named Ginger, and now a cat known as Delphi (Little Boy) brought joy to her life.

Jane was nicknamed “Janey Boozer” by a family friend, Sam Backling, because of the way she drank her bottle as a baby; it was shortened to “Janey B” over the years. Jane had the opportunity to visit Yellowstone National Park twice. The first time, she was told to only bring one plushie – she ended up filling their trailer’s bathroom completely full with stuffed animals. On the second visit when she was about 6 years old, upon smelling the sulfur pits, she commented that it smelled like her brother’s farts!

Jane is survived by her Mother, June Smith, husband W. Scott Lake, daughter Vic (Amber) Lake, her older sister Jill Vanance, nephew Chris Vanance and family, her older brother Jack Smith, sister-in-law June Smith and nieces Ashley Putnam and Tiffany Smith and their families, mother-in-law Denise Lake and sister-in-law Lori Hinsberger, brother-in-law Robin Hinsberger and their children Kyle, Tristan and Lawrence Hinsberger, as well as numerous aunts and uncles. She was predeceased by her father Edward Smith, her grandmother Ethel Jane Brinston Rance and her father-in-law Wilfred Lake.

Today I lost my sister:
It’s been a real tough day.
What a real heart twister
To lose her in this way.
I’m really gonna miss her.
Don’t know what to say,
For I lost my baby sister.
Pray the pain will go away.

– written by Jack Smith, in honor of his sister Jane

There will be a private service at a later date.

    Auntie Jane,

I remember the times when me and Ashley would run into your room back in Marlborough, jump on your bed and listen to all your favorite songs. What’s New Pussy cat, Tiny Dancer, etc.
We had so much fun dancing, and being silly with you. You were always so young at heart, kind and sweet. The memory of you will live on through your beautiful family.
    Love,
    Tiffany

Words can’t express how sorry I’m am for your loss. Jane was the light of your lives. Always there to lend an ear, support or advice. Watching both of you deal with the issues you have in the last week reinforced how wonderful a wife and mother she was. Leaving Kyle in Jane’s more than capable care when he was younger lessened my worry as I headed in to work each day and for that I am so grateful. We will miss Jane so very much. May she rest easy.

Mom, I’m really going to miss our times together. How we would watch movies together almost every night when you still lived at home with us. How I would talk about our cat’s silly antics and his behavior. How we’d team up on dad and make fun of him together.
Truly, I miss everything about you. I will be watching Beetlejuice and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice with dad (and making fun of him just as much as always) and watching Bridgerton and Outlander in your honor!
I love you so, so much, mom, everyone does. Hope you’re with your kitties, your dad and your grandma right now wherever you are. ♡
