BOUTLAND, Wilma Rae 1928 – 2020

Wilma Rae Boutland, nee Hornberger, loving mother, grandmother and friend was peacefully called Home to her beloved Lord and Saviour on March 16, 2020 at the age of 92 while being a resident in the Vulcan Long-Term Care.

Wilma was born in Vulcan, Alberta, on January 09, 1928 to Pearl and Ray Hornberger where they homesteaded in Armada until moving to Vulcan to help the girls finish their education. Wilma worked at the post office until she met Charles (Charlie) Boutland and together owned and operated the local IGA for many years. Together they served the community with great pride through sponsorships, school functions, church activities and even lovingly packaging monthly food baskets that they left anonymously at homes for those in need.

Wilma had unwavering faith in God and faithfully served for many years with her church home at the Church of Christ since she moved to Vulcan at 16. She joined the choir in her younger days and was a member of the Candlelight Ladies where she served diligently for every event. Sunday dinners were always an open invitation to the minister and congregation and was joyfully served. Wilma was also very busy and worked full time but always made time for her family and friends with a delicious meal and welcoming visit. She will always be fondly remembered for her kind, gentle spirit and generous Christian heart.

Wilma is survived by and will be deeply missed by her daughter Deb. She is also survived by and will be missed by her daughter-in-law Kathy, her grandchildren, Robynn and Tyson, Katherine, Gracie, David, Gabby and Jennifer as well as her great grandchildren, Chase, Quinton, Cooper and Oliver. Also, her two grand dogs, Diesel and Lily who gave her such great joy when they came to visit. She is also survived by her sister June Fischer and nieces, Wendy, Sandy and Linda.

Wilma was predeceased by her devoted husband, Charlie, her loving son, Chuck, her brothers Jack and Bud and recently her precious grandson, William “Will” whom she is now joyfully reunited with. With respects to her wishes, a private family ceremony was held graveside on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

A very special thanks to Dr. Hudson, all the nurses, personal care attendants, physiotherapists, kitchen staff, cleaning staff and maintenance workers, volunteers and any of the remaining hospital staff for the amazing care they took in making sure she was well taken care of. Everyday Wilma sent her gratitude and prayers to everyone and was thankful to be in such a loving environment. A big thank you to Louise, Shannon, the Rec Staff and amazing volunteers for making each day a delight with music, outings and lots of love and laughter. A sincere thank you to all the pastors and volunteers for their dedication to Sunday at the hospital which allowed Wilma to continue her church services. A warm thank you to Joy and Jalupa, Norma, Sylvia, Janet and Gary Martin, who were loving visitors to her and made her day special with each visit. Last but not least, to all the wonderful residents that were an important part of her community there. Thank you to Pat Wisener for his kindness and loving assistance. I know she would want to reassure everyone with this worldly situation and she would lovingly reassure you that God is in control and to read Psalm 121: 1-8 and her daughter’s dedication to her Mom, Psalms 23: 4, one of Wilma’s favorites. May God’s protection and blessings be with everyone.

If friends so desire, tributes in Wilma’s memory can be made to some of her favorite charities to the ministry of 100 Huntley Street and the Crossroads, to the Calgary Mustard Seed or charity of your choice.

What a lovely and gracious lady Wilma was.She always had a smile and genuinely wanted to know how you were when our paths crossed. Years ago she sent the most delicious cookies to school with Jennifer and Jennifer was kind enough to share one with me. And now I have Wilma’s recipe in my recipe box and whenever I make them, I think I think of Wilma and Jennifer too.
Our condolences to all the family. I’m sure you have many wonderful memories.
    Sincerely,
    Bud & Sharon Cockwill

I’ll miss your mom’s gentle, encouraging way. When I went to encourage her, I always walked away feeling better about me because of her kind words.
    Her smile will be missed.
